phpBB 3.0 > 3.2

Post by PCGUY112887 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 5:34 pm

Hello everyone,

Glad to see 3.2 has finally entered the RC stage!

I'm curious, can the built in update engine handle an update from 3.0 to go directly to 3.2? If not, I presume I must upgrade to 3.1 first then to 3.2?

If anyone has any thoughts on the subject, let me know. Thanks!

A lot will depend on which version of 3.0 you are running

considering that you can not use any of the files, styles, MODs etc. for 3.0 in 3.1 and you certainly will not be able to use them in 3.2, then the best way to upgrade is just do a simple file replacement.

however, 3.2 is not ready yet for your live board. it is just a RC1 which is release candidate stage.
it should not be used on a live board just yet.

so, there is no reason to worry about upgrading from your current 3.0 to 3.2 yet.

wait for the final release when it is stable and then do the upgrade.

Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.x to phpbb 3.2.x
  • Your server must be running at least PHP 5.4 and less than PHP 7.1
  • Most MODs for 3.0.x are incompatible with 3.2.x and their functionality will be removed in the update process.
  • Styles for 3.0.x cannot be installed or used on 3.2.x.
  1. Backup up your board's files and database
  2. Download the Support Toolkit. Install it and run the database cleaner to remove all old MODs from the database.
  3. Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
  4. Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
  5. Set British English as the only language pack
  6. Delete all of your phpBB 3.0.x files EXCEPT for the following:
    • The config.php file
    • The /images/ directory
    • The /files/ directory
    • The /store/ directory
  7. Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from the uncompressed 3.2.x Full Package (EXCEPT for config.php) into your forum's directory (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
  8. Browse to yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/ then click the update tab. Click update. then submit for update database only.
  9. Delete the folder named /install/
  10. Hold one foot in the air and spin around in a circle three times saying "I am a phpbb guru".

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. I am indeed aware that none of the styles/mods/customization that I currently setup will work in 3.2. Perhaps I should have technically asked if the database could be migrated from 3.0 to 3.2 via the upgrader/installer included with 3.2. Luckily I've been around for quite a while, using phpBB since the early days of 2.0 so I've seen this come quite a far way. Also had my own fair share of code hacking away, particularly during the 2.0 days where making mods work with other mods was always an interesting challenge  .

I'm mainly focusing on planning out my upgrades for the next several months. I don't plan to use 3.2 in a live environment yet, just want to setup a development environment and start thinking about how I will make things flow. Since I have a lot of customization I know that I'm going to have to rethink how a lot of my website works for my users, then user mods that get approved for 3.2 to take care of some of my needs. I hope to simplify things some to not have so many mods and customization to rely upon.

Thanks again!

if you follow my instructions above, then it will upgrade your 3.0 board to 3.2 with no problems.

you have to remove all the MODs from 3.0 first as per #2 in those instructions.

the whole point of extensions in the 3.1 and now 3.2 branches is that they are not allowed to edit core phpbb files. therefore, the upate process is very quick and simple by doing a core file replacement.

now, between 3.1 and 3.2 some 3.1 extensions may not work in 3.2, but most should.

Hey everyone.

I really hate for my very first post to be the resurrection of a very old thread. But google led me here via my search.

I just set up a new forum literally a week old and i figured before i go adding mods and fixing stuff and adding users requests already, it might be good to just jump right in and upgrade to the latest and greatest.

With that said is there a more up to date process for updating from 3.0.x to 3.2.x ?

Thanks everyone.

I followed instructions. On the install/update screen I now get this,

Code: Select all

The installer detected a timeout
The installer has detected a timeout, you may try to refresh the page, which may lead to data corruption. We suggest that you either increase your timeout settings or try to use the CLI.[/quote]

If I rename the install file, and visit the forum I get this

Hi everyone

Sorry for the bump but, I'm having a problem with the database cleaner tool in the STK. When I try to run it, I get this error (with phpBB debug turned on):

[phpBB Debug] PHP Notice: in file [ROOT]/includes/database_cleaner/functions_database_cleaner.php on line 369: Only variables should be passed by reference

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Sam
