Update from 3.2, make a clean install of phpbb?

Forum running php 3.0.14 and lots of mods, out of the blue some clown decided hey lets update the forum and not tell anyone...so one day i came in and it looked like hell, the forum works but there are remains from mods both here and there.
The clown have not fixed a thing and will most likely not do anything about the errors so i guess im stuck with it, over the years lots of old files have been left on the server so im thinking about making a clean start so i wonder.

What would happen if i removed all old files, installed a fresh copy of phpbb 3.2, put in all attached images in its current folder and pathway and then load the database, would it work or cause even more issues?
