How to make it so read threads go to the latest post upon visiting?

Post by dannyg86 » Sun Jun 11, 2017 5:02 pm

Hello everyone!

I want to start this, by thanking both the PhpBB team and the community, for the amazing work you do.
I'm a computer programmer by trade, so feel free to tech up the answers.

In other forums (like vbulletin, invision power board etc) when you've read a topic, the next time you visit it, it will take you to either:

A) The last read post
B) The latest unread post

In Phpbb, it always starts at the threads first page and post, regardless.

Is it possible to change the behaviour so that it acts as I'm aiming for?

I'm running the latest version of Phpbb v 3.2.0

Thanks in advance.

This is a user setting in the UCP, Board preferences, display options. There the user can choose to have posts sorted in a number of ways and displayed ascending or descending.

The normal setup is exactly the way you're saying you want it to be. It sounds like your cookies might be wrong so it's not remembering where you've already been.

I have all my settings on default. In that regard.
Thank you

I thought that it should be, it seemed odd. So i've tried two browsers now. One a fresh install, with cleared caches on both also. Chrome and Edge.

Even after revisiting a thread (with 3 pages in this instance) and reading every page, it always starts at the first page, first post when I go back to the topic again from the forum index.

Anything else I can try?
Thank you

That'd help, wouldn't it? :)

Thanks again.

Cookie domain
zionmax.co

That should be

.zionmax.co

Change that and change one of the characters in the cookie name (just so everyone gets booted off and gets a new cookie next time). That should fix it.

Thanks for the response Kev. So this is what I did:

- Cleared my cookies and web data.
- Renamed it to .zionmax.co
- Added an extra character to my cookie name.
- Cleared my cookies and web data.
- Tried it again, still no dice. Always brings me to the first post, first page :/

I don't know if you guys offer help in the form of a temp admin account on users sites (I wouldn't blame you if you didn't) but if that's an option, i'd happily take you up on it.

If not, anything else I can check? Or will it take longer to kick in?

EDIT: Ignore me, i didn't follow your steps, you meant rename the cookie name, not the domain. I'll report back

EDIT 2: I followed the steps correctly this time, but still no dice. I edited the steps I took above.

EDIT 3: So this is now the situation:

- I get taken to the latest post, if the thread is on the board index and I click it from there.
- I get taken to the first post if I click the thread from within the forum's listing. Is that the expected behaviour?

Any further suggestions?

Current status:

- Clicking thread link on board index brings me to the latest unread post
- Clicking thread link inside forum listing always brings me to the first post.

If you click the topic title you go to the first post.
If you click the icon to the left of that you get taken to the latest unread post.

Right, I see. So it is the intended behaviour. Makes sense now.

Is it possible to make it always go to the latest post, regardless of which link is clicked?

I do see the benefits of the icon on the left, however, when there are no unread posts, the button doesn't work (can't click it) so it has a slight drawback in that regard (imho).

Thanks for all your help Kev, you're a star.

The icon doesn't then work because there is nothing new to read so that makes sense. It's also a different colour (might be style dependent) to show you that you haven't got anything new in that topic. If the link only goes to the latest post you then inconvenience the people who didn't want to go to the latest post :).

To change the link behavior you'll need to request an extension. I vaguely remember someone asking this one before though.

Alright then, what you're saying makes sense. We can mark this topic as resolved then :)

Thanks again
