We are currently running phpBB Board software version 3.2.1 having upgraded as recommended to comply with PHP V7. As we now appear to be getting a large number of robot membership registrations of late all with dodgy commercial website links both in the member signature block as well as in the body of the member record itself, so I checked the following:
‘User registration settings’ THEN
‘Enable spambot countermeasures for registrations:
Requires new users to pass the anti-spambot task to help prevent automated registrations.’
To find this option set to 'NO'
SAME WITH
‘Spambot countermeasures’ THEN
‘Enable spambot countermeasures for registrations:’
Requires new users to pass the anti-spambot task to help prevent automated registrations.
To find this option set to 'DISABLE'
I am filling in as a secondary board administrator, AND according to the board owner he has never asked the administrator who also deals with the technical side on a number of sites and is generally busy, to change these settings from YES and ENABLE. [By the way CAPTCHA Plugin is installed.]
Therefore, before I set both options to YES and ENABLE respectively, I wonder if someone would be kind enough to answer some questions.
Does a phpBB software version upgrade, in this instance to version 3.2.1, reset settings formerly set up to some kind default OFF status?
ALSO how difficult and longwinded does resetting the options above to YES and Enable make the registration process for genuine new individual users rather than spambots [I wondered whether the flags might have been switched off for that reason - as in the difficulty level in terms of increased registration complexity is putting new members off?]
Also on another subject but still relating to upgrades: We seem to lose most attached image links on posts every time we upgrade the software, and IMAGES attached to posts are presented post upgrade as blank, black rectangles; until they are manually restored, which is a huge job. Is there a way of preventing this happening or some kind of attached images re-linking function available during the upgrade process?
Thank you very much for the advice and guidance in advance. Regards BeBop
And it also helps a lot if you have to approve the first post of every new member.
