considering that you can not use any of the files, styles, MODs etc. for 3.0 in 3.1 and you certainly will not be able to use them in 3.2, then the best way to upgrade is just do a simple file replacement.

however, 3.2 is not ready yet for your live board. it is just a RC1 which is release candidate stage.
it should not be used on a live board just yet.

so, there is no reason to worry about upgrading from your current 3.0 to 3.2 yet.

wait for the final release when it is stable and then do the upgrade.

Upgrading from phpbb 3.0.x to phpbb 3.2.x
  • Your server must be running at least PHP 5.4 and less than PHP 7.1
  • Most MODs for 3.0.x are incompatible with 3.2.x and their functionality will be removed in the update process.
  • Styles for 3.0.x cannot be installed or used on 3.2.x.
  1. Backup up your board's files and database
  2. Download the Support Toolkit. Install it and run the database cleaner to remove all old MODs from the database.
  3. Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
  4. Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
  5. Set British English as the only language pack
  6. Delete all of your phpBB 3.0.x files EXCEPT for the following:
    • The config.php file
    • The /images/ directory
    • The /files/ directory
    • The /store/ directory
  7. Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from the uncompressed 3.2.x Full Package (EXCEPT for config.php) into your forum's directory (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
  8. Browse to yourdomain.com/yourphpbb/install/ then click the update tab. Click update. then submit for update database only.
  9. Delete the folder named /install/
  10. Hold one foot in the air and spin around in a circle three times saying "I am a phpbb guru".
Lumpy do those instructions still work? I need to upgrade from phpbb 3.0 too. But there's no longer any update package for going from 3.0 to 3.1. Can you ask the webmaster to put it back again? Otherwise, what can I do? Thanks.

phpBB 3.0 > 3.2

Post by Mick » Sat Nov 18, 2017 8:54 am

You’re carrying out an upgrade not an update, this is the correct upgrade path.

Notes:
  • Your server must be running at least PHP 5.4 or higher.
  • phpBB 3.2 is not compatible with 3.0 and most of the previous files will need to be removed prior to upgrading.
  • Styles and MODs from 3.0 cannot be installed on phpBB 3.2. To upgrade, perform the following steps:
  1. Make a back-up of the original files and database
  2. Deactivate all styles except for prosilver
  3. Remove all MOD-related changes from the database. The Support Toolkit's Database Cleaner can be used for this.
  4. Ensure that the activated spambot countermeasure is one of the standard phpBB plugins (Simple image, GD image, GD 3D image, Q&A, reCaptacha).
  5. Set British English as the only language pack and delete all other language pack directories from your server
  6. Delete all of your phpBB 3.0.x files EXCEPT for the following:
    • The config.php file
    • The /images/ directory
    • The /files/ directory
    • The /store/ directory
  7. Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from the uncompressed 3.2.x Full Package (EXCEPT for config.php) into your forum's directory (Note: you don't want to overwrite your original config.php file)
  8. Browse to www.example.com/install/
  9. Click the Update tab
  10. Click the Update button
  11. Select "Update database only" and click Submit
  12. Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% and for a message indicating that the update has completed
  13. Delete or rename the /install/ directory

Thanks Mick. So one can upgrade directly from 3.0 to 3.2? Without having to upgrade to 3.1 first?

Why isn't automatic updating package available for this purpose?

Also, what's the risk? What can go wrong? Do you still have to clean the database table of any mods first? If so, how do you do that?

And what about the CAPTCHA? Does that need to be reset to default?

Yes.

Because it is not a good way. You would need to delete hundreds of files manually, increase the mistakes quota and you just don't need the old probably edited core files.

Everything can go wrong. So make a backup of everything and try with a copy of your board.

There were issues with the updater so it was pulled. In any case, as I said, you’re performing an UPGRADE not an update.

Under normal circumstances, following the instructions above, there should be no problems. You will have a full files, folders and database backup in case anything does go wrong. Make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

Thanks Mick. Does this support article still apply?

https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/

If so don't you have to delete these folders from the installation package too?
Delete the following files from the package:

The config.php file

The images/ directory

The files/ directory

The store/ directory
Otherwise they could write over those folders in your 3.0 files right?

No as that is 3.0 to 3.1. Just follow the instructions I gave you exactly and to the letter.

Btw how would I know if my database had any mods installed in it? Is there a command or query to check that or unveil such mods?

If you run the database cleaner it won’t matter, it will remove anything mod related.

Ok thanks. A few more questions.

How do you install the support toolkit? Do you upload it to a certain directory on your forum?

Instead of deleting the files from phpbb 3.0, can't I just create a new directory and upload phpbb 3.2 and then copy over these files from phpbb 3.0?

The config.php file
The /images/ directory
The /files/ directory
The /store/ directory

Then rename the directory and then delete the old directory? That way I don't risk losing the files from phpbb 3.0 before the installation is complete.

What do you think?

Here you go, taken from here: https://www.phpbb.com/support/stk/index ... de=install
To install the Support Toolkit, upload the complete "stk" directory into your forum's root directory on your server (the one containing a file named "config.php"). Once you have uploaded the directory into the correct place, point your browser towards the toolkit to access it (http://www.example.com/phpBB/stk/). In the "contrib" folder you will find some additional installation instructions (in the MODX format) which will allow you to better integrate the STK with your phpBB installation.
You should always keep backups of your files before doing anything. I suggest following the instructions given to you previously.

Thanks

Dear Support,
I have a question about the following directories.

The images/ directory
The files/ directory
The store/ directory

When I upload phpbb 3.2 into my forum root directory, won't the three directories above in the installation package merge with the same directories from phpbb 3.0 that you said to leave in there? If so, will any files be overwritten? Or will all the files be completely different?

As I understand it, the images directory will contain all the avatars of the users, so they will not be lost after the installation right?

Take a look in those directories from your phpBB 3.2 package. What do you see?
