Almost from scratch...

Post by Eleri » Tue Dec 05, 2017 11:40 pm

I'm overhauling a forum that's been sitting at 3.0 and not working for quite a while now. I'd like to go with a shiny clean install, and then import the existing member list, groups and posts. (Which will then get archived, but people want access to the older content.). I don't need the theme, or any of the mods we had, just the people and conversations.

What's the best way to go about doing that? I found some old information to do with the config file, but I figured asking for current steps would be helpful.

Thanks!

Have a read and follow the instructions found here:
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/

I understand how to upgrade- that I've done before. That's not what I'm doing here.

Yes, sorry.

So after upgrading to 3.2, you can follow the ‘Backup’ and ‘restore’ section of this KB article:
https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... or-domain/

Upload a clean copy of 3.2 and restore the database.

Thank you. That'll leave behind any mods and themes that were on the old forum, and only bring over the users and posts?

You can use the STK to get a database that is pure 3.0.x, then upgrade using the instructions Elias posted. STK can be found at: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/official_tool/stk/

You cannot import just parts of a database, though. After importing the whole database, delete what you don't want using the interface.
