Robots in the "Who is online" list

Post by Webmasterks » Sat Dec 09, 2017 1:01 am

When I take a look at Who is Online on my forum, I notice that 90% are bots. Do I need to restrict them, or validate them or what do I need to do with all those bots washing over my forum? Can it hurt or do they help? I obviously have no clue.

Can someone shine a light on this for me?

Thanks :-)

If the are in the list, the are normal bots you find in ACP => spiders/robots and you don't have to do anything.
Unless you have private info and you don't want that visible for bots.
Restrict in that case the access for that forum for the bots.

I do have a couple of private forums and the members of those forums need special group permission to enter. But if a bot can get in, would that be a security issue? Because even when a bot gets in those forums, can they index them and would snippets of text end up in search machines?

Whatever a bot can see, it can index. So if a bot can see the subforum (on the index page, even if it cannot enter that specific subforum), then that subforum title (with latest poster and postdate) could end up in a search engine)

Just set the bots to cannot see/read for those specific forums (create a role for those situations).
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

Thanks, I will. Is the large number of bots anything to worry about, i.e. do they make my board slower or my server speed?

Leave it to run a couple of days and see what happens.
