Spaces in Usernames - surely there is a registration bug

Post by phil_h » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:24 pm

User registration settings clearly say that:
spacers are: space, -, +, _, [ and ].
However, if you select
'Any character', 'Alphanumeric and spacers', 'Any letter, number and spacer', or 'ASCII'
a proposed username is rejected with:
The username you entered has been disallowed or contains a disallowed word. Please choose a different name.

That is either a bug in the 'spacers' description or a bug in the software.

Now, if there is a workaround that 'everyone knows', please make it show up in searches ;) or just post here so its available 'next time'.
Many thanks in anticipation.

And what's the user name you're trying to register?

Was that a one-click installation/upgrade?

It was upgraded by the hosting company so I have no idea, but I am sure it would have been the easiest option possible !

So, even though no-one has said it, I'm guessing that your forums have users with spaces in their usernames ?

Is there a mod I could do to get a log of what causes the username rejection ?

Yep, here's a topic from someone who registered only a few days ago with a space in their name.
viewtopic.php?f=556&t=2452966

The message says it's disallowed if there's a space which suggests it's actively being blocked by something.
Try disabling all of your extensions and seeing if that works.
Or, as Mick suggests, if it's a host version then it has a bug in it that we know nothing about as we don't make their files.

The forum is getting popular now, but I suppose I'll just have to make them suffer for 10 mins while I disable everything.

So - 'a host version' means what exactly ?
The hosting co have absolutely zero skills/experience with phpbb - I merely asked them to upgrade because the bandwidth from my home account is very low.
It reports as 3.2.1 - shouldnt a custom version report differently ???
If I do the 3.2.2 upgrade should that level the playing field ?

Hosting companies often provide 1-click installers for popular web software, like phpBB, wordpress and others. We don't make those files and they are known to have bugs that we can't deal with because we don't know what's been changed. As someone else installed it for you it could well be that.

What extensions do you have?
Can you also post screenshots of the ban option windows. Especially the username one.

Nah - their web package still offers 3.1.9 as the one-click install, so it will have been your upgrade package.

(Extension list is above)
I'm uploading 3.2.2 at the mo and the forum is unresponsive, so any more info will have to wait.

Not if they've upgraded with their tweaked files.

EDIT: What does that custom memberships extension do? That might be one to try turning off first.

So perhaps I should install a test forum from their 1-click and see what that does
