Is there a way to make the phone number on a profile page "click to dial"?

Post by menz01 » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:37 pm

Hello all,
I hope this is the right place to ask this and I apologise if it isn't. I was curious, since the majority of my users browse our forums using a mobile phone and not a computer, is there a way to make the phone number on a members profile page able to be a clickable link that puts the phone number in your dialer to make a call. I have seen this on web pages on the internet, is it possible to do on phpbb?

Thanks in advance

so it seems its phone specific :( that is sad. i have a motorola z play and when i tap a phone number in my members profile it will highlight the set of numbers that i tapped then immediately highlight the rest of the numbers and at the bottom of my screen offer to call the number. On my iphone this does not happen. on a friends galaxy edge 7 it also does not do this. so i am guessing its phone specific if it will work

its just too bad that BBCODE does not have the same abilities as HTML to make a phone number into a clickable link

Truthfully, I have read it 3x and I guess I am missing it  not sure if it matters, but the the post you are telling me to read is about making a phone number clickable in a post. I am talking about the phone number in members profile. Like I said I am not sure if that matters or not.

As I said I read the post 3x and I still don't see how to make the phone number in my profile pages clickable. My motorola phone will allowed me to hold and select the number and my phone will then give me an option to call but other phones don't do that

I really don't get what I am missing and I am trying

I assume your phone number field is a Custom profile field. Make the field of type "Link" and see, for example, this http://allwebco-templates.com/support/S ... e-link.htm

There are other web resources discussing phoneto: and tel:.

Yes it is a custom profile. I made it a link and I am still having difficulty. When I go to my profile now it wants me to type a link like http:// and does not accept anything else. I tried

<a href="tel:1-847-555-5555">1-847-555-5555</a>

Didn't like it. So I tried

tel:1-847-555-5555

Didn't like it either. I am not sure what it wants but it accepted http://test.com

I hope whatever the format is is not to difficult for users to enter

Making some progress. I put this in my custom profile field:

tel://+1-929-555-1212

And it accepted it and it works as a link but the phone number actually displays as tel://+1-929-555-1212 to everyone instead of +1-929-555-1212

Still trying to figure this out so any help is still very much appreciated

As per the topic linked to +44 123 456 7890 works as a link to a phone call as does +44-123-456-7890 and 001 44 123 456 7890 using Apple products, my home built Intel desktop, on here and on my test board. I suggest you make an extension request if you can’t get this to work as you want.

The OP could create a custom BBcode and try and use my extension, which parses BBcodes into Profile Fields.

[3.2][RC] BBCode Enabled Profile Fields

As a side note, the above topic is not meant for support creating custom bbcodes. :)
