Adding users to experimental phpBB

Post by Rigel Van Gogh » Wed Feb 07, 2018 4:56 am

How do I add users to an experimental phpBB when I do not have an operational email setup?

At this point I am researching the setup and administer phpBB. I am also interested in writing extensions. Some of these are critical to how I wish my forum to operate. As a result, I need to test this out prior to launching my forum Publicly. That is why I do not yet have an email address dedicated for the forum.

My guess is that I might be able to send enrollment email to the local spool. My other guess is that I can skip the standard enrollment process and simply use the MySQL commands to insert the user into the database.

First, there is the "ACP Add Users" extension https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... add_user_2
Second, you can try the developers tool "QuickInstall" https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/offi ... ckinstall/

Damn, Marco beat me ..

You can register yourself as a user on your forum using an inexistant e-mailaddress e.g. falseemail@impossible.home
When you are logged in as administrator you can manually activate that new user and give that user the required permissions for testing.
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

using an inexistant e-mailaddres
only if this
screen53.jpg
is set to "no"

And better use a testing domain as described in RFC 2606
  • .test
  • .example
  • .invalid
  • .localhost
    or
  • example.org
  • example.net
instead of impossible.home - somebody can register that domain and complain about receiving unwanted or spam mails

Thanks for the nfo. I didn't know there were "testing" domains. I'll use that from now on.
But don't worry, nobody ever got unwanted mails because of my testuser accounts (for temporary testusers I've always used my old invalid email adresses on parked domains, for permanent testusers I use my own old but still valid email adresses)

why not just setup an email address like normal. until you tell people that your board is live or post links to it nobody will know anyway. or, at least it will take a while for google to find it and then for people to find it etc.

Thank you canonknipser. This was the exact extension that I needed.
