phpBB won't detect mariadb

Post by Landslyde » Wed Feb 14, 2018 11:27 am

I had sqlite3 and mariadb installed. phpBB picked up on sqlite3 just fine but completely ignores mariadb. So I removed and purged sqlite3 from the system and phpBB STILL doesn't recognize mariadb, only showing SQLITE3 in the combobox of available databases. I'm open to any and all suggestions on this.

Do you have mysql support enabled in PHP (NOT in phpBB)?

and is it enabled in your php.ini?

Maybe you need to check your OS or Webserver documentation how to enable it

There are different ways to connect to MariaDB. I have a few listed on my site at Connecting to MariaDB. Maybe one of the suggestions will help. (On my website I use option 1 for phpBB)

That really has nothing to do with the problem at hand. The dropdown menu which shows all DBMS platforms supported by the server's install of PHP is not showing MySQL/Mariadb as supported.

@Landslyde: In addition to what canonknipser said, you can use the phpinfo.php file in the install/ folder to verify that PHP has correctly loaded the MySQL extension. It will be listed as a module.

You can create a phpinfo.php file by using the following:

Code: Select all

<?php
    phpinfo();
?>

it is already part of phpbb so in most cases you can just use it. however, if you can not access it for some reason then yes, you can certainly create your own and upload it to your server and access it in your browser.

Normally MySql databases use port 3306. If sqlite3 was installed first it probably grabbed port 3306. When you installed MariaDB it may have defaulted to port 3307. At least this is what happened when I switched from MariaDB 5 to MarriaDB 10. So in this case you need to specify the correct port in the phpBB config.php file to connect.

Check phpinfo.php the get the port used by MariaDB. If the MariaDB port is 3307 your configuration entries would look like this:

Code: Select all

$dbms = 'phpbb\\db\\driver\\mysqli';
$dbhost = 'localhost:3307';
This link has additional info for configuring MariaDB.

Again, the user is not even at that point yet. PHP itself needs to detect that the module has been installed. Also, SQLite does not use ports, it's a direct file based DBMS.

My bad... I was going by the topic name phpBB won't detect mariadb instead of realizing it was supposed to be php won't detect mariadb.

Forgot to add, you are right and I was wrong about SQLite.
