Is it possible to restore an old board into a new category of a new board?

Post by menz01 » Fri Mar 16, 2018 11:40 pm

Hello,
I was admin of a PHPBB 3.2.1 board and it was hacked. i dont want to get into the details but i had to get a new webhost and and everything. before it was totally destroyed i took a backup from the ACP --> maintenance section. i never did that before so i really wasn't sure what it would do without an actual database backup from the webhost control panel but i did it and stored the file. My club went on built a new PHPBB 3.2.2 board from the ground up and moved on. Today i created a test PHPBB 3.2.1 board and wanted to see what i could actually do with that file i stored and was surprised that my whole board was pretty much back minus the extensions and styles but all the content looked like it was there.

I am not sure if this is possible or not but what i am looking to do is on my new PHPBB 3.2.2 board create a new forum category called archive or old board and get all my content from the 3.2.1 board on my now test board into that new category. i would very much like to avoid doing months of "copying and pasting" if possible. so is there any way to backup the board from my test 3.2.1 board and restore it in a new category on my new in production 3.2.2 board?

thanks in advance

I realize I can link it but I would really like to have my test board for testing on and not for users to use. So is there no way for me to migrate the data from one board to another?

Install another test board for you to use if you can, and use it as a linked archive.

Extremely difficult to impossible.

ok fair enough. then how about this, is there a way to link the "test board" to my new board and not have to have users "double logon" (if they click the link to go to the test board it brings them to a logon page) but still require a logon prompt if you go to the forum link directly?

I assume they will not be posting? It's just an archive? Make it Read-only for guests. No logging required.

but wouldn't that make it so anyone that knows the address or stumbles upon it have access without logging in?

Does it contain sensitive information? Was it a closed board before? You could password protect the forums.

yes it does contain sensitive information. you need to register and logon to access our forums normally. I am curious as to your suggestion on password protecting the forums, what would that do?

really what i would like is, and it sounds like its not possible, is that when my users log on to the production forums that when they click the link to the archive forums that they just get in and if you are not registered for my forums or access the archive forum link directly that you are asked to logon

As mentioned before, that's virtually impossible since you have a new phpBB3.2.2 board with forums, subforum, topics, posts, members, etc.. all of which have ids which are already in use in your old board (3.2.1). Merging those will result in a completely broken board (with no recovery possible but for reinstalling the 2 seperate boards).

Would it change things if I were to upgrade the test board from 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 like the current one is?

Not really, all you would do is update the 3.2.1 format to the 3.2.2 format but the unique IDs won't change and would still cause conflicts, in fact since most IDs are unique you wouldn't even be able to import records with already used IDs in the tables.

You could make the whole archived board full access for guests and then password protect the folder it is in using .htaccess. If no one needs to post, you could make it Read-only for Guests.
