Set all permissions, board index displays, but not Forums

Post by itsrg » Mon Mar 19, 2018 10:33 pm

Support Request Template
What version of phpBB are you using? phpBB 3.2.2
What is your board's URL? http://pixelbobs.com/MRG/Forums/
Who do you host your board with? ixwebhosting.com
How did you install your board? I used the download package from phpBB.com
What is the most recent action performed on your board? Fresh Install
Is registration required to reproduce this issue? Yes
Do you have any MODs installed? No
Do you have any extensions installed? No
What styles do you currently have installed? prosilver
What language(s) is your board currently using? British English
Which database type/version are you using? MySQL 5
What is your level of experience? Experienced with PHP and phpBB
What username can be used to view this issue? itsrobbygt
What password can be used to view this issue? 2427394
What actions did you take (updating your board; installing a MOD, style or extension; etc.) prior to this problem becoming noticeable? No answer given
Please describe your problem. Installed a phpBB 3.0.7 board from my hosting service and it didn't work out very well.
Deleted the installation
Deleted the tables but retained the empty database on my server

Constructed a fresh install of phpBB 3.2.2 which had been downloaded from "www.phpbb.com/downloads/", and used the existing database described above

Constructed 5 Forums and set permissions for both the forums and the admin

Constructed a new standard user ("itsrobbygt") and set permissions for both the forums and and the user to "Standard Features"

Board index page displays as expected: http://pixelbobs.com/MRG/Forums/index.php

When selecting any board, the page loads with the error: "The requested page could not be found."

I believe that I have been through every possible permission for Forums/Users and am unable to view/post in any Forum whether using the admin account or the standard account

Maybe a new database should have been constructed for the fresh installation? That's the last thing I can come up with

Your Cookie domain is showing pixelbobs.com and it should be .pixelbobs.com, note the leading dot. See Knowledge Base - Fixing incorrect cookie settings

There are no ‘threads’ in phpBB, they are topics.

Thanks for your attention to my plight!

OK, the Cookie domain been changed from pixelbobs.com to .pixelbobs.com.

Unfortunately, the problem still persisted.

I then deleted all board cookies and the board behavior was unchanged.

I then tried different computers and different browsers with no change.

I should also mention that the ACP has the following errors at the top of the page:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HTTP input character conversion is improperly configured
mbstring.http_input must be set to pass. You can check the current value on the PHP information page.

HTTP output character conversion is improperly configured
mbstring.http_output must be set to pass. You can check the current value on the PHP information page.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried setting these to "pass" using the .htaccess file in the root folder of the installation, but it rendered the BB unavailable. I'm not sure these settings would affect the visibility of the Forums in any case.

So, I'm still at a loss on this - any further suggestions would be most appreciated.

Those settings need to be made in your php.ini file - if you do not have access to it then you need to speak to your hosts

Ow, you might have a problem there. Your php version is probably 5.6 or higher and many hosts stick to the php recommendations and refuse to activate deprecated functions. Still there nothing wrong in asking (insist that you need it for phpBB).
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

You need to speak to your host as server set up is beyond the scope of these forums.

OK, I've changed the php.ini file so that BOTH mbstring.http_input is set to pass AND mbstring.http_output is set to pass.

This has been verified using phpinfo.php

These error messages below are NO LONGER being displayed in the ACP...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HTTP input character conversion is improperly configured
mbstring.http_input must be set to pass. You can check the current value on the PHP information page.

HTTP output character conversion is improperly configured
mbstring.http_output must be set to pass. You can check the current value on the PHP information page.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've cleared cookies both in the browser preferences and using the "delete all board cookies" on the phpBB.

Unfortunately, the problem persists.

There should be another php.ini/htaccess host's side which overrides yours. i have already faced a similar situation.

When selecting any board, the page loads with the error: "The requested page could not be found."
So.... does viewforum.php exist? How about viewtopic.php?

Yes, the pages load, but when a forum link is selected the message "The requested page could not be found." appears where the desired forum should load.

The file "viewforum.php". Does it exist?

OK, the file exists - only in the address bar! Why not redirect to an error page?

Strange - when the package is unzipped locally the viewforum, viewtopic and viewonline pages are constructed, but when unzipped and installed on the server those pages aren't constructed.

I uploaded them from my local machine and the BB is functioning as expected.

which once again proves that the system that most hosts use for that decompressing does not work and you should not try to decompress/unzip on the server.

that is the standard advice given here ever since that so called feature became available on the hosts.

Fair enough, and it does state that clearly in the Quick Start Guide..."After you have decompressed the phpBB3 archive and uploaded the files to the location where you want it to be installed..."

IIRC, I believe I strayed from this when the first installation (from my hosting service) failed and a general search at one point turned up with the advice to decompress the zip on the server. Thanks for pointing that out...
