Upgrading from 3.0.11 to 3.2.2 The installer detected a timeout

Post by TheDude2 » Wed Mar 21, 2018 3:36 am

I had some problems with SMF forum software and I was only able to get a converter to work with phpBB 3.0.11 so that's what I converted to,
my phpBB 3.0.11 has no modifications at all, I only used it for a few days after a new install,

I followed the upgrade guide https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/
about a dozen times and each time I get the same result, after about 2 seconds I get an error message that says:
The installer detected a timeout.

I made the modifications listed here viewtopic.php?f=556&t=2453611
and tried it another dozen times each time reloading a backup of the database, and I get the same results
after about 2 seconds I get an error message that says:
The installer detected a timeout.

I installed another new copy of phpBB 3.0.11 and made about 10 posts and I was able to upgrade that database to 3.2.2 without any problems.
that database is much smaller than the 85meg database that gets the time out error.

I left everything the same and just restored my large database back into the database that just successfully worked
and I get the installer detected a timeout.

So it seems to me that a smaller database will work, but my larger database will not work, so the problem has something to do with the size of my database.

my last ditch effort was to contacted my host and they removed the timeout limits on my account, and I tried several more times, but each time after about 2 seconds I get the same timeout error message,

after the first time I run the database update it will say after the timeout error message:

Skip “installer.update_filesystem.download_updated_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.update_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.show_file_status” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.diff_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.check_task” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_ftp_settings” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_files” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.file_updater_method” task

does anyone have any ideas what I could try next?

Check your config.php and change the database entry from mysql to mysqli if it isn’t already and try again.

I set it to mysqli from the start.

does anyone know where I would start to look to try to comment out whatever check it's doing that creates the timeout error?

since it only runs for a couple seconds it seems like it's probably not an actual time out.

The messages you are getting lead me to believe you are not using the full 3.2.2 package, because there would be no file updating if you were. Give us a link to the software you have downloaded and then uploaded - what link you downloaded it from.

Since a new 3.0.11 upgrades without any problems, but your 85MB one times out, there must be something in the 85MB hampering the upgrade, and it's not the size (85 MB is nothing exceptional).

The messages you posted mention something about update filesystem which makes me wonder whether you are using the correct method.
The new files (3.2.2) should be copied by you (the full package) and you should only update the database.

Did you follow the instruction https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... /upgrade3/ exactly as they are written?
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

I just tried it one more time,

I created new directory so there would not be any hidden files

downloaded a new copy from:

https://www.phpbb.com/downloads/

Download phpBB 3.2.2 (zip)

unzipped and uploaded to the new directory

deleted the config.php file and 3 other directories,

uploaded the old config.php file and 3 other directories.

went to the install directory and ran the update and select database only and I get the same error message:

The installer detected a timeout

The installer has detected a timeout, you may try to refresh the page, which may lead to data corruption. We suggest that you either increase your timeout settings or try to use the CLI.

Skip “installer.update_filesystem.download_updated_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.update_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.show_file_status” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.diff_files” task
Skip “installer.update_filesystem.check_task” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_ftp_settings” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.update_files” task
Skip “installer.obtain_data.file_updater_method” task

it runs for 2 seconds and I get the above message,

since my phpbb 3.0.11 is new I did not use the support toolkit, would it do anything to help a new install of phpbb 3.0.11 with no modifications?
