Member states he has been banned

Post by raysor » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:57 am

I have a member of many years that tells me that he can't log into my forum as he gets a message saying he has been banned.

I have checked via the ACP security, there is no ban on Email, IPs, User, or disallow usernames. I have a ban on some IPs for spam problems, but the IP address for this particular user is not in the list. I don't know what to do next, any ideas would be much appreciated .Thank You, Ray.

Have you used any wildcards in your IP, email or username bans?

If I am not mistaken the error message should give more information than you have given. You need to get the full error message from him and that should point you in the right direction.

The IP bans won't do much in the way of spam protection as the IP Address can change. Additionally, what is the full message the user is receiving? It should say something tot he effect of "a ban has been issued on your username".

Thank you both for a quick reply, The bans that I have issued are the people trying to register and have a 1000 toxic email address as checked with Stop Forum Spam, and I have not used the wild card option.

The actual message the member receives when trying to log in is " You have been permanently banned from this board.
A ban has been issued on your IP address "
Thanks for your time.
Ray.

A ban has been issued on your IP address
That says it all - you have banned the IP address that he is currently using.

You have either banned the individual address, it is within a range of IP address or, as I asked earlier, in a ban containing wild cards.

One easy option is to tell him to reboot his router so that he gets a new IP address that, hopefully, will let him in.

Alternatively "unban" all the banned IP addresses on your board.

Banning ip addresses is a waste of time. Use a good Q and A.

and with a good Q&A you will not have to worry about stop forum spam or banning or anything else. the spam bots will not be able to register and as long as you don't allow guest posting, you will not get any spam posts etc.

Thank you David63, will get him to try the reboot router first, failing that will try the second option.

Thank you Stevenmaury, I have used a good Q & A for a few years now and it has been very good, but it's the humans that get passed it, ideally it would be good to have these IP address with there thousands of email address stopped before they could get to the registration page. But then I suppose that would cause problems regarding PHP.

Thank,
Ray.

and those lists of emails with the same IP are not going to help you.

just like in your current situation; what probably happened is that the IP you banned is no longer used by the spammer that was using it when you banned it and is now being used by your member. IPs change all the time so using them to ban users is a complete waste of time.

Thank you david63, rebooting the router did the trick, the member is now back on the forum.
Thank you to Kinerty for the useful input.
Thank you Stevenmaury for your sugestions.
Thank you Robert for explaining why banning of Ips is a waste of time.
As the forum is a small one, new registrations have to be activated by admin, those with the extra long and strange looking names will get deleted after checking them out, so the genuine can get onto the board.
What would we do if it wasn't for you guys giving up your free time to help us out.
Thanks.
Ray.

You might want to have a look at the stop forum spam extension I have listed in my signature or alternatively check out CIDRAM over at Github. It has a SFS module that can be used and many that other modules. Like banning whole countries both in IPv4 and IPv6 formats. Plus, it will ban cloud hosts from connecting to your site like Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Digital Ocean, etc. These services should not be connecting to a website and are more than likely scrapers or hackers.

The trouble is that widespread wildcard banning like those is exactly why this innocent person was banned in the first place. If they're on a common ISP you'll be banning other people who might want to join your board and will also find they're banned for no reason. If they don't know about rebooting the router they'll never join and may well never come back either.

none of which is needed to solve your problem.

one good Q&A will stop all of the spam bots.
