Spam registrations

Post by daveholliday » Mon Jun 11, 2018 8:25 pm

Hello, I'm new to managing a forum but have established one (running on version 3.2.1). However, I'm being inundated with spam registrations. I intially set up the registration using captchas but was inundated with spam registrations so I changed the procedure to include a more difficult question and answer test and this seemed to work initially but now I'm back up to 300 spam registrations in the last month or so. It's very time consuming going through all these trying to work out if there are any genuine subscribers. Any suggestions please?

Thanks
DH

hard to say when you haven't given us any info to go on.

a link to your board would let us see what system you have in place etc.

Try one or both of the extensions in my signature. They are here on this site. One is the Sortables captcha and the other quires the stop forum spam database.

Hi guys, my board address is http://www.devonfungusgroup.uk/forum/

We're just a tiny natural history group, so I can't understand the point of all these spam registrations.

Usually setting up Q&A for registration works much better than the code you have to enter in my experience.
I am a web developer/administrator, specializing in forums. If you have work you need done or are too lazy to do, pm me!

My extensions:

I will PM you a Q&A which will stop your spam. You also need to set the New member post limit in Registration settings to 1.

I am trying to stop spam registrations now as well. Tried to install Google ReCaptcha but it doesn't seem to be working very well. What is the current BEST solution. Almost forgot to give you my site ( https://nationaltbucketalliance.com/bb/index.php )
Please help, thank you Janet

BTW, I just changed the spambot countermeasure to Q&A, will that still work? We used to use this before the Google ReCaptcha (but with a different question)?

Your Q&A should work, at least for awhile. One problem is that you are asking questions about a text string, so those can be analyzed. But try it and see how it goes. You may want to put an image in your header and ask about that, if your current question gets solved by bots.

Also, are you making your numerous custom profile fields mandatory? Because if you set your New member post limit to 1, you can check the field answers and see if they look OK before approving a first post.

Finally, in the future, we prefer you start your own topic rather than piggyback old topics. Thanks.

Hi, sorry for the piggyback, I didn't realize that.
As for an image, that is what we used to have and it was what we were using when the spam registrations started.
I will also look into the custom fields option.

Thank you so much for your help :)
Again sorry for the piggy back.
Janet

What question were you asking about the image? "What color" is no good because the bots will just cycle through common colors.

How many t-buckets were in the logo, but from what you are saying I guess the bots would just cycle through numbers then.
