IP Ban - to which IP actually?

Post by PowerIdeas » Mon Jun 18, 2018 7:30 pm

Lets say, that user will use diffetent IP every time - for registration, for activation, for 1. post and for 2. post.

After 2. post i will give him IP Ban. Which IP I will actually ban?

In that instance, IP banning will be a bit pointless because they'll just restart their router again and get another IP.

The ban only applies to the one they're using at that time if they match.

Using at the time - so last IP used? Or last IP which used for making a post?

it doesn't matter which IP you ban because chances are when they come back they will have a different IP anyway.

banning via IP is a waste of time. many, if not most people, get a new IP address everytime they log into their ISP and/or everytime they reboot their router etc. etc.

contrary to popular believe ( tv shows ) the IP address you are using at any given time really can't help anyone find out who you are or where you are etc.

Actually, if you look at the IPs on those shows, you will see one node which is at least 300.
If the user is using such an IP, you can tell exactly where they are.

The one they're using at the time they come to the board.
You have 4 totally different IPs on this site for example. I could ban all 4 of them and you could then just restart your router and circumvent all my hard work.

Come to the board first time to register? Or last time before ban? Or first time after ban?

The one they have at that time they're visiting the board. If it matches their reg IP or any of the post IPs they won't get in, but if it doesn't they can carry on as normal.

So if I IP ban to someone, it will ban their reg IP and all the post IPs?

If in doubt then ban all the IPs that they have used, but as has been said it will not stop them. Banning usernames and/or email will have more of an effect in slowing them down as they will have to re-register, but that is about the best you can hope for.

There is another option and that is to de-activate their account - again only a slowing down process but it may be just enough to deter them and they will go and annoy somebody else!

If all of those are the same IP address or you ban multiple addresses if they have used more than one, yes.
But it won't stop them coming back because it's easy to beat.

slightly off/on topic....lets say their forum sits behind a reverse proxy and all IP's get changed to the server IP.....which IP is then used if a ban is given?

Is it the server IP in which case "everyone" will be impacted?
