Attachment to a different drive

Post by vnchitty » Fri Jul 13, 2018 8:36 am

Is it possible to have my installation at C:\ and attachments in D:\Attachments ?

or it will only use the location of the installation drive/files ?

Currently, the attachments folder (default files) must be a subfolder in the boards folder structure.
I don't know if it is possible with windows to mount a folder on a different drive - with Linux/Unix it is easy to have subfolders on different drives

You could create a symlink on Windows (haven't actually tried this), but I would advise against this if you don't understand what you're doing.

It would be interesting to know why the OP wants to do it.

I can think of a few reasons why a person might think this is a good idea (not necessarily saying it is a good idea!), eg perhaps it's cheaper to have secondary host for read/write access to attachments only than to add extra storage to the primary hosting plan? Redundancy in case of server failure?

In any event, there is a validated extension to do this using Amazon AWS S3 for cloud-based hosting of attachments: https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/extension/aws_s3/

Which is for 3.1.xx actually.

On a side note,
phpBB 3.3 has the facility to have a secondary host for read/write access to attachments/avatars and what not (namely storages), already.
