Silent Installation Failure on Mac OS X

Post by rich06 » Sat Oct 13, 2018 8:07 pm

I cannot install phpBB on Mac OS X. After entry of the database connection parameters the installation loops back to the previous screen (administrator details) - no errors are shown on screen and nothing seems to be logged... support template below.

Mac OS X 12
Chrome/Firefox/Safari - all fail
MySQL v5.6.10
PHP v.5.6.16

are you trying to install all the software or are you using MAMP as suggested in the other topic?

best to use MAMP, that way you know the server setup is working as it should.

I am a developer with several sites on my Mac and I cannot and will not install MAMP just to run one site that won't install (installs fine on Ubuntu so it is related to Mac OS X). The installation issue could be solved much easier if there was some sort of log or error message generated...

OSX12 isn't out yet so I assume you mean OSX10.12

That would be down to you and the way you have your server set up to make sure there is a logging system in there.

The issue will be somewhere in your server set up.

Yes it is OS X 10.12.6 -- I apologise for the omission

So you say it is nothing to do with phpBB despite:-

1) The same software installs fine on Ubuntu
2) phpBB does not trap or detect or log this 'server set up issue' - all other PHP apps such as Wordpress don't seem to have the problem and install fine
3) Tellingly other Mac OS X users have reported the exact same issue in other threads in this support forum - the only response has been 'install MAMP'

Sure - I can start to debug your application's installer but I don't have the time or the inclination TBH

If OSX can run phpBB with the versions of PHP, Apache and MySQL included with and configured by MAMPP, but cannot run it with the versions installed and configured by you, then maybe the problem is not OSX. But to check that you would need to try MAMPP.

I assume your web server setup seems to work, otherwise you would probably not make it to the page for entering the database details.
When you say no errors are logged, do you mean in the PHP error log or somewhere else? Also, have you tried enabling the developer tools in your browser and checked whether any JS error or message is displayed there?

Thanks for your replies.

I now have phpBB running now on OS X with no issues so far... however to achieve that I had to basically install the code/database on a Ubuntu server then copy the database to my Mac environment and take it from there - a silly way to have to do it but hey I don't have time to fix the installer and I certainly don't want to have to install MAMP on my dev environment for just this one problem...

In summary, the problem on OS X is with the phpBB installer module not the base code itself - I also ran an upgrade from v3.1 to v3.2 on OS X with no problems so the issue lies somewhere in the installer module code just relating to installing the product for the first time... hope that helps someone to narrow down where the problem lies.
