I'm having trouble trying to follow the setup instructions below...

Specifically the part about 'board-wide emails'. I'm not clear what mechanism is used to actually send the emails? Has phpBB got it's own, internal system to handle the sending, (i.e. like a sendmail clone or similar), or does it just use an existing service like gmail or whatever. I WANT to use an internal system, obviously, as it gives the warning that the password is sent in plaintext so I don't want to use my own gmail account or whatever.
What am I misunderstanding here?
