phpbb 3.2-3.2.4 fresh install?

Been tasked to fix a broken forum, its currently running on phpbb 3.2, want to update to 3.2.4.

the main issue is that someone came over the password and accessed the forum through ftp and edited a large number of files, i have removed the edits i found so the forum is working again but what if i missed one edit...

Is there any way to update from 3.2 to 3.2.4 with a fresh install of all files but keep the old database and attached files?
