Post by Exclusive » Sun Dec 02, 2018 5:30 am

Is there any possible way of allowing guest to see images in a topic but can't download attachments like .txt, .pdf etc...??

You can limits attachments you don't want Guests to download to a forum or forums Guests can't see.

I don't think this is possible. If you set the permission for guests to view attachments then they can see and download those attachments. I think, though not sure if it's feasible is to have someone create an extension that allows guests to view attachments, but not able to right click and download them. But I have a strong felling that would use java script, and a savvy user would just disable JS in their browser and thus able to download the attachment. The extension would have to be crafted in such a way so users (guests) can't right click the attachment and download it.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

The big problem with that is once you've seen an image or an attachment, you've already downloaded it. I don't think there's an easy way to have images and links viewable but not right clickable.

There's an easy way to mislead users into thinking that it's not downloadable by putting a transparent image on top of the image, attachment or link. But anyone really interested in downloading will find a way to bypass that or just check the source of the page or the browser cache.
It's not worth putting any energy into that.

Yes, I saw somebody mentioned that on here a long time ago and I had a play with it myself but abandoned it because, as you say, it was too easy to circumvent and not worth the bother.

İ think "Exclusive" wants that: guests can see images types attachment but they can't see and download other attachment types like txt, zip, pdf etc.

What he is suggesting is probably not ideal but is as close as you are going to get for what you want to do. Go into the ACP, on the posting tab on the left click "Manage attachment extension groups". Click the gear next to "Documents" on the next page. On the next page down the bottom you can limit what forums those extensions can be uploaded to, if you limit those extensions to forums where only registered users have permissions then guests would not have permissions to download them.

You'll need an extension that provides some basic trickery to hinder a guest from downloading, but it won't be full proof.
