Spam registration is turned on but they keep requesting

Post by Nick225 »

I get 40 registration requests a day since I moved to phpbb3. I know it's all bunch of bots so I delete them. But they keep coming. lol lol.
From ACP, I turned on the spam feature thinking it would stop them. ... but no.

That means your Q&A question is too easy as the spambots are able to answer it and complete the registration.

Which spam feature are you referring to? It's easy to set up a Q&A which can't be solved just like that by bots.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Not only is your Q&A easily Googleable (and that IS her last name) but you are running version 2.0.x, support for which ended years ago. The only help we can provide is upgrading to the latest version. If you wish to do that, start a new post. Closing this one.

If your board is not at http://www.tennisgamers.com/board/ please PM me with the URL of a version 3.2.x board.
I can stop all your spam. I can upgrade or update your Board. PM or email me. (Paid support)

Yeah, that's a phpbb2 old site. That's not what I am talking about here. Sorry for not clearing that up enough early although I said "my 3-week old" phpbb3 forum. My bad.

Thanks Steve for unlocking the topic. ... I am not sure what else to turn on to keep those bots from driving me crazy with those requests. I leave for a couple of hours, come back and there are 25 requests. I delete all of them. Come back later and there are 40. lol lol lol.. I don't think they expect me to activate all those accounts. Just annoying.

I am still getting used to this phpbb3. Get bunch of errors when I hit "Search", probably from the Rich Text editor format left-over from my phpbb2...

My extension list disappeared after I installed "Avatar on the left".

You need a more robust question.
Something you can't just paste in to a search engine and get the answer to pop up.
Something that isn't blindingly obvious like 'what colour is the sky' or what is 2+2 or write this backwards.

Ask something that requires some logic or understanding to solve such as asking what is in your site logo or a the name of the first forum or something along those lines.

The site at issue is a different site. It is using an old GD CAPTCHA which was broken years ago. You need a good Q&A. Like:

Q: What is the word following "par" in this board's header?

A: Excellence

Still seeing the bot-bait (vernacular for outdated and broken Captcha ;) )
You have to specify which antibot -system to use, just defining the Q&A doens't mean it's being used!

Yes .. After adding the Q&A option, I went back and checked.. the Image stuff was still up.. Then I realized, ooops, need to turn on the Q&A.. :) ... I did..
Then I ran a test trying to register with the wrong answer.. I was stopped..
GREAT help.. THANKS.. Now waiting for those bots.

Edit:
Loving this phpbb3.. although I am struggling to get a hand on the features. But it makes phpbb2 look like a Yugo car. :)
The main forum reached 460,000 posts. It was getting slower. Maybe it would be ok with phpbb3. But I already made it private and stucked it away. Members don't have to load it anymore..
