I've tracked down the Apache log files on the server and have the following: [error] [client xx.xx.xxx.xx] [host anglophone-direct.com] (36) File name too long: AH00127: Cannot map GET /https://https:/anglophone-direct.com/ht ... /index.php HTTP/1.1 to file, referer: http://anglophone-direct.com/https://an ... /index.php
Could this be something to do with the problem?

Wow, that's one helluva long url.
Seems to be some circular replacing going on.
Any more info in the logs? (which call exactly produces this error?)

ppf, disable all extensions, see if it still happens. If not, enable them 1 by 1 , and test.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

1. I've had another look at the logs and there doesn't appear to be any more information. There is a second error which is exactly the same but for a slightly different file
[Sun Dec 09 01:51:55 2018] [error] [client xx.xx.xxx.xx] [host anglophone-direct.com] (36)File name too long: AH00127: Cannot map GET /https://https://https://https://https:/ ... /index.php HTTP/1.1 to file, referer: http://anglophone-direct.com/https://an ... orum//phpb
The site was originally migrated across from phpBB2.0 so I wondered if something had become corrupted during the migration, causing the circular referral, but I don't know enough about it to be able to guess what it might be.
2. I did find that I'd missed the final / off the RewriteBase directory in the .htaccess file and have added that in in case it makes a difference.
3. I disabled all extensions but it makes absolutely no difference with the notifications problem. I can't see if there is still an apache log error because the logs are only updated on the server once per day, so I can't access them till tomorrow.

Yes, and it's not just me that's having the problem - nobody is getting notifications.

Hello again,
I have just received a notification of a reply to a topic that I posted, so it looks as if changing the .htaccess file has worked, although I've just sent a PM and it's not yet sent me a notification of it. I will continue to monitor and ask others to do the same. I've also checked the server apache error log for yesterday and the "file name too long" error appears to have disappeared.
Thanks for all of your help.
