phpBB Bug? Need fix!

Post by Exclusive » Sun Dec 30, 2018 11:00 pm

I discovered the very easy way people copy phpBB styles is by getting direct access to the CSS files eg:

Code: Select all

example.com/styles/prosilver or stylename/theme/colours.css
which could result in copying peoples hard work.

Any fix on this ? as blocking directory listing didn't work, and minifying the CSS is the same thing if they can get access to these files.

But this is a big issue! It took me 4days in styling my forum, and someone just copied my whole style in less than 24hrs! Pissed  !

How do you want your browser to read the html and css if you hide it?

Again, that is the way the internet works.

This should be my first place of complaint because I'm using their services! Then later I can go further or take to the top! So don't blame me, fellow.

As others have stated, you cannot block access to the JavaScript and CSS files as the browser directly accesses those in order to render the page. You can block access to the *.html files in the styles/<your_style>/template/ directory though since the template engine uses those and not the browser.

Edit:

I have been made aware that I was mistaken in what I posted below. what I said only applies if you are going to distribute the style.
sorry for the confusion.

how did you create this style? did you start with prosilver or some other style? if so, then most, if not all, of your style has to be open source according to the GPL public license you agreed to when you decided to use this open source software.

Distribute? If I distributed it myself I wouldn't be complaining, It was copied or I may say stolen.

Even if you could do something to block access it would be a waste of time as all anyone has to do is view the page source and click on the links in there and the code will be displayed.
