Updated to 3.2.5 but now cannot post - SOLVED

Post by Matnum PI »

Switched my hosting and updated my phpbb. Was at 3.0.x and moved up slowly just to make sure I didn't have any glitches. 3.0.1x to 3.1.0 to 3.1.1x to etc. until I got to 3.2.5. And when I looked at the forum from the testing area, it looked great. So I brought it live and... It still looks great but... i cannot make posts or topics. checked all the permissions and other normal phpbb stuff. Nothing. I can send PMs but... No posts, no topics, no replies. Any ideas?

I think this has something to do with my moving the forum and directories. Anyone with any thoughts? This is not my expertise.

There is no need at all to update to each minor version seperately. In most cases the whole upgrade can be done in 1 movement, and only in a few cases can it be useful to stagger the upgrade (3.0.x > 3.0.14 > 3.1.12 > 3.2.5 ).

What do you mean with "moving"? Changing host? or changing the root directory?
If it's changing host : read https://www.phpbb.com/support/docs/en/3 ... or-domain/

Give some more information using the Support Request Template and give as much detail as possible.

I'm not 100% sure that the phpBB doesn't have any extensions or MODs but I don't think it does. One MOD on the wikilist of MODs is Apache and during the searching to fix this I saw a line that refers to Apache. Also, I'm sure that I added stuff to my phpBB when it was 3.0 like smilies and maybe even more complicated. It's possible I modified something or added an extension but I don't remember doing it. Also, if relevant, PMs work.

re: The link you posted. I did most everything on this list but I did not:

Ensure Disable board is set to YES.
I do not know if the FTP program was set to "Binary" mode for files with no extension.
When I downloaded the database, I'm not sure if Complete inserts was checked, and Extended inserts was unchecked.
I re-did my config.php. There were differences. But nothing changed in terms of my problem.

I've just had a look at your board (using the testaccount). I didn't click submit but everything seems normal.
If you still have your 3.0.2 board, I 'm willing to have a look at it, it's a medium to small sized board with nothing fancy so upgrading should be simple and fast.
Do you have a backup made with the phpBB backup system?
Send me a PM if you want me to upgrade if (I would upgrade it offline on a personal webserver). (PS no money involved).

So, currently, the forum works on a private server but still doesn't work (the forum is 100% except... The User can't post, reply, etc. types "hello", presses submit and it's like this is an erase button. Literally nothing happens except the post is erased.) on the GoDaddy Server. Someone's working on this but thought it couldn't hurt to get some thoughts from this mob.

I won't torture you all with the details of how we got from point A-to-Z. The solution was... Disable user.ini. Fixed. :)

I already said this privately but I also want to say it publicly, Warmweer, you're a good, patient man.

that is good work both of you.
since there is no user.ini file in phpbb it is no wonder none of us could figure out what the problem was.
user.ini is a server file that allows you to make changes to the server software setup without having access to that level on the server.

This was a painstakingly long search for the solution to a basically non-existent phpBB problem. The upgrade went fine initially, the timeouts where due to the searchtables, so truncating those solved that immediately. The upgraded board worked fine (as expected) on my localhost but not online. After testing with Wampserver (different php versions) and then (out of frustrating) also on my host, and encountering no problem at all, it dawned upon me that the problem was not in the phphbb but with the host.
I suggested making a fresh board on the host: and since that also didn't work, Matnum used their Instrallatron and... guess what: that didn't work either.

Only when the host (GoDaddy) was told that their installatron board didn't function properly, did they come with a solution.
Now I want to see that user.ini to know what was in there blocking posting.

To translate, after 4 days of all but constant contact with GoDaddy and two installs more that didn't work, one by GoDaddy, then GoDaddy took some responsibility and I was able to speak to the Hosting Solution technologist. "Did they come with a solution" was trial and error until they found the issue. Not my longest call with GoDaddy over these 4 days but still an endurance test. This whole experience I'd rate as slightly less than a Margarita on a beach. On the positive side, the Hosting specialist who helped, he was helpful.
