Update puzzle

Post by bacon tacon » Mon Feb 11, 2019 4:10 pm

Hi

I updated my forum this morning from version 3.2.3 to 3.2.5.
Everything seemed to go well until I removed the install folder and navigated to a blank page (HTTP ERROR 500).

After failing to diagnose the problem I ended up deleting all files and folders except /ext, /files, /images, my custom style and config.php.
I then uploaded a clean 3.2.3 installation and restored the pre-update database.

The weird thing is that now everything seems fine but ACP tells me I'm running version 3.2.5.

How can this be? I wonder if for some reason the database restore failed.

I'm not quite sure how to proceed. Is there a way to check if I'm running a 3.2.5 updated database?
If I am, would it be OK to just upload the 3.2.5 files?

Thanks for any assistance.

Can you open your DB backup and look at the version entry in the config table?
For REALLY good and VERY inexpensive hosting CLICK HERE

I can stop all your spam. I can upgrade or update your Board. PM or email me. (Paid support)

Hi - Opening the DB backup in notepad I see: ('version','3.2.3',0).

From what I can make out, although my host control panel lets me highlight and click 'Restore' on the database backup - and then says, 'Database restored' nothing actually happens.

So I was running files for version 3.2.3 with an updated 3.2.5 database. I would have expected to see errors.

Anyway, I went ahead and uploaded the 3.2.5 files and everything seems fine...

It may be fine or it may not be fine. Inconsistencies in a database other than what is expected should be a red flag.

As the coalman said: there's a red flag waving at the moment.
From what I gather, you did not restore the database backup using the phpBB feature, nor using phpMyAdmin, but using a host feature.
That makes me think that the database backup was made using a host tool.

Your safest bet is to restore the 3.2.3 files and database you had and then to retry updating.
A bug is a feature that hasn't made it to the manual (yet)

Thanks for your input.
That's correct, I did not restore the DB using the phpBB feature (it's too large), nor phpMyAdmin (which no doubt I should have). I used a host feature which in fact did nothing, and left the successfully updated 3.2.5 database in place.

The board's still up and running fine (far as I can see), so I'm inclined to leave things as they are (because I'm lazy and pushed for time). Is there anything I could test that might prove otherwise?

You could make (and restore) backups in fractions.
In most cases the 3 search tables don't even have to be backuped, or if they do, then make a separate backup of those (or just truncate them and repopulate after updating).
The posts_table is the next space guzzler so that one could be backuped seperately also.
