Moderating Private Messages

Post by Jayson » Thu Feb 21, 2019 11:13 am

Hi Community,

Is there a way to check private messages to ensure illegal activity is not taking place on my forum? Hopefully it can be done or people can exploit the software for illegal activity knowing administrators cannot check messages.

Any help appreciated.

Thank you.

You would need to request an extension for that or see if one already exists.

Always a bit of a sticky subject because it's a bit like asking to read someone elses email. If they want to do that, they can just contact each other off the board anyway so it's not really stopping anything at all.

Thanks, I'll check extension requests. As of late I've noticed a select few members logging in often who do not contribute with strange, even temporary, email addresses. They could be sending mass emails spamming other members and this can effect the user experience for everyone. I agree, there are potential ethical issues with reading messages but by no means do I want my website to become an underground ring for illegal activity either.

What spambot countermeasures are you using?

There are permissions you can set to stop mass PM. By default the registered users can't mass PM. If you're using the newly registered users group as well, people without the required number of posts can't PM at all.

In addition to KevC, if a user feels offended by a private message, he can always report the message. This gives a moderator the ability to read that specific message and take appropriate means.

You can disable the PM system by using permissions, as KevC explained. Or create a special group like "trusted users" and disable PM for all wo are not member of that group.

There is this: https://github.com/ForumHulp/pmspy
And if you don't want your users to know you can read the PM's, just delete this event: https://github.com/ForumHulp/pmspy/blob ... after.html

Thank you, I'll look into modifying permissions. I have Stop Forum Spam installed.

Thank you, establishing a separate group sounds like a excellent idea.

Thanks for the link. Is this safe to use on a board as it has not been approved?

If it's not officially an approved phpBB extension there are no guarantees and any support will have to be via the author on their support site.

It's running on my test forum without errors. Works perfect

Not to sound negative about this but is it nice to read private communications between others, I think not. Never mind that it could also be a privacy violation and potentially be legally hot water. I have never done it on my forum in 14 plus years and would not recommend anyone else to do it.

All the best.

Peace

Plus, they're called Private Messages for a reason. If you don't want members using the PM system for nefarious reasons turn them off.

I have to agree with that. In any country with a legal right to privacy and secrecy of correspondence, it can be assumed that reading PM is a criminal offense.

My 2 cents: Whether an extension is in the CDB says nothing about its quality. It is more important to read the support topics for it. Better to avoid authors who do not answer support questions themselves, who do not update their stuff, and who do not fix bugs for years.
