(sub-)Forum that normal users can't start new topics in

Post by rudi_br » Mon Feb 25, 2019 5:18 am

Hi,

I would like to be able to create a sub-forum, that normal users can't create a new topic in, but are able to make replies to topics started by a designated user.

It's kind of a "blog" feature. I want one or more designated users to be able to create a topic, and all other users to be able to read and comment this topic.

Is this possible using the roles in ACP?

If yes, could someone please spell it out for a dummy like me ;)

My forum is an amateur astronomy (danish) located here:

So, you'll need two groups for that.
The "registered users group" and (lets call it) the "Authors" group.

Then you set up forum permissions for the "Blog" forum.
This can be done under: ACP > Permissions > Forum permissions > "Blog" forum.
Then select the registered users group and the Authors group, so we can set them both at once.
Then under the "advanced permissions" you'll find various tabs, of which one is the Post tab.
For the Registered users group you can "Start new topics" to "No" and "Can reply to topics" to yes.
For the Author group you can set the "Start new topics" to "Yes".

And that's it! Add your authors to the Authors group and they can start topics.
While the 'plebs' can only reply!

Thanks a lot Mr Goldy!

That sounds like just what I was looking for, I'll give it a try tonight after work and report back here about the outcome.

I gave it a go in my lunch break, and it is working as intended, thanks again...
