Hello all, I decided to use the Google reCAPTCHA V2 setting in the spambot countermeasures of the ACP because I was receiving spam using the other methods there but now I am still getting spam accounts  :(
Can anyone recommend what they consider to be a good spam countermeasure ?
I did try using the reCAPTCHA V3 but it does not appear to be compatible and work with phpbb3 ?
Any feedback much appreciated :D 8-)
Thanks

Q&A works fine if you pick the right kind of question.

Nothing you can search for the answer for, no general knowledge, no maths questions. Something specific about the site or something that requires some logic to work out like asking about the site logo or a word somewhere on the site.

Hello Kevc, yes I will try going back to Q&A and making the question a little more difficult :!:
Its a shame as I thought the Google ReCAPTCHA was going to work very well :(
Thanks

I don’t think recaptcha is that reliable anymore and it’s been cracked a couple of times in the past.

You do not need a difficult question, what you need is a difficult answer

An example of a hard question but easy answer:-
  • Q: Hydrogen appears at what position in the periodic table ?
  • A: 1
An example of a easy question but hard answer for (say) a car marque forum:-
  • Q: What is this forum main content?
  • A: Ford Mustang
Ensure Guest posting in not allowed, and you do not have TapaTalk and SPAM will be a thing of the past (well, virtually as Human Scumbags (I mean SCAMmers) will still be able to register lika any other person.

Also, set the New member post limit to one so you can approve a user's first post.

We had one who was beating the captcha and coming back with a different disposable email address every day. There's a list of temp mail domains you can ban in the acp and it's up to date. You just have to edit the list to put *@ in front of each domain (like *@trashmail.com) before you put them into 'Ban emails'.

https://github.com/wesbos/burner-email-providers

EDIT TO UPDATE: After 2 weeks they are still registering with temp domains that were not on the list, even though the list was 4207 domains.

I would not recommend adding all of that list in your ACP as it will slow your site down considerably.

There is a new Akismet spam extension you can try. Akismet is not necessarily free, depending on your usage.

In a similar vein, there is also the Cleantalk service and the Cleantalk extension. The service is $8/year for one website. The version of the extension here is old, so I recommend getting it from GitHub if you use it: https://github.com/CleanTalk/phpbb3.1-3.2-antispam. For forums that get inundated with spam, the Spam firewall feature on the new version of the extension is really nice, as it keeps most of this traffic from even hitting your server.
