Hopefully this might be a useful summary of what is expected.
I did all of the above steps on my "Elegance" style, and it entirely solved the problem. Thank you so much for so fully describing what needed to be done. You saved my bacon...

Interesting thing about point 7 there. Can't access the admin panel but I can of course access the cache folder via FTP. However, I don't have anything in there except two other folders, installer and production. Something not right there?
I should have confirmed "files and directories"; the cache files for access of the main site and ACP do go into the /cache/production subfolder now, so its removal of that content which is going to "clear you cache" when coming in by FTP. You can delete the folders that exist under /cache and they will be re-created when needed. If you're not seeing any existing files under /cache/production either, then I would be concerned that maybe my /cache directory permissions aren't set to 777 as intended.

Regarding specifically the absence of .htaccess and index.htm at the root of /cache itself, there is nothing overly fatal about that. But yes I would have expected to see those files that phpBB puts into that directory, too. i.e. The .htaccess and index.htm that are included in the /cache folder of the phpBB product download. But these files are really just to stop the browsing and access of the /cache directory by web clients, and are not "required for proper phpBB cache operation." You can get those two files from the phpBB download and add them to your /cache directory now.

Thanks for all the help and info so far.

Managed to get it up and running again using the suggestion by huggle in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=556&t=2510241
I replaced the following 3.2.6 files with their respective 3.2.5 predecessors:
styles/prosilver/template/login_body.html
styles/prosilver/template/index_body.html
includes/functions.php

Not a good idea as there could be other changes in those files that will cause problems. It is far safer to edit the current version than mix files from different versions

I'm definitely in agreement with david63, and am not a fan of that approach. Neither generically as a "when I have problems with a new release, I'll pick and choose individual files to back-rev in order to avoid then", and also not specifically in this case, in reference to the exact files and versions cited. Back-revving the template changes, in this specific case, happens to not lose anything else; but back-revving the functions.php is tossing a whole lot of other phpBB 3.2.6 changes besides just the login_box() change.

You'll get away with it for a time, and maybe it's indeed the only option you found that worked for getting the forum back on its feet today. Hopefully it does continue working for you until there is a better working solution available.

I agree it is not an ideal solution but none of the edits worked and I cannot afford to have my forum members not be able to log in. It is an important forum in my niche so that quick and easy solution will work for now. Hopefully when the next phpbb update comes there won't be any issues like this but I think I will hold off updating for a week or so and see how others are getting on.

First off thanks for pulling this together and making it available. That said I’m curious why the phpBB team isn't compiling the information and posting it as a sticky.

Other releases with known problems have been handled that way in the past.

Or would Tastenplayer's fix by removing {S_FORM_TOKEN_LOGIN} from the index_body.html do the job without compromising anything?
In no case permanently and in no case in a liveboard. This was just an attempt on my part to find out why there are login problems.
However, I can log in to the Navbar without any problems. The problem only exists in the Quicklogin below with me.

Nice. For what it's worth, something that might still deserve mentioning in the download description is the expectation that "if your installed style is using its own non-proSilver templates for index_body.html, login_body.html, login_forum.html and/or viewforum_body.html, you can continue to see exactly the login failure described, until you separately update your selected style's templates."

Just thinking that without the caveat, some users would hit the login failure, download and apply the "easy fix for known phpBB 3.2.6 issues", and end up concluding "no it doesn't fix it" because their login still fails in exactly the same way.

Thanks for that, its a good point, I'll add it now , though its just although its just login_forum.html and viewforum_body.html. (see https://github.com/phpbb/phpbb/pull/5578/files)

Yes, the edits in https://github.com/phpbb/phpbb/pull/5578/files works perfect. Just don't forget to also update your other styles... https://area51.phpbb.com/code-changes/3 ... -prosilver

It's "only those two files" that needed changed in Pull 5578 because the other template changes had already been made in the phpBB 3.2.6-delivered proSilver.

But when talking about the currently-installed style on the board of a user who just installed phpBB 3.2.6, their style needs "up to all four" templates adjusted. Because their style may not inherit from proSilver at all; or even if their style does inherit from proSilver, it may have overridden one or more of these four templates.

Got you.
E.g. in some styles the navbar_header is inserted into the overall_header (no navbar_header is in style).
And in some the quicklogin in the index_body.html is formatted like a forabg. Where the new login token is contained.

(Whether this formatting plays a role, for any fixes I do not know. Just to be on the safe side.)
Edit: In my new style the quicklogin is formatted as #oldstyle_forabg.forabg ;) And he's almost finished.
