Who do you host your board with?
Like Steve said, this should be the answer, if you used GoDaddy's Installatron to make create your phpBB 3.2.5 installation. The Installatron control panel has a setting where you can select "no updates"; here you can see an example screen shot
of where that setting is. It's definitely not phpBB itself that "automatically updates without your knowledge."
The recommendation from phpbb.com/community
is that you don't use a third-party installer at all, let alone the automatic update feature. Because "what did the third-party installer actually do?"
is an unknown compared to using the official phpBB.com download and manual installation process.
I actually appreciate and use the Installatron installation, updating, backup and restore features. But be forewarned that some support responses won't go any further than "replace your installation with an official installation or we can't help you." You can also get responses that try to help identify what the problem actually is, since there are plenty of phpBB issues that occur which have nothing to do with how phpBB was installed, and/or can still happen even when using the official phpBB.com download.
