I just had the same frustration. The button is gone due to security, good to know.

The only problem I am having now which I dont suspect is server related because I run my own server where I cant see any issues.

The problem is that it takes some time to actually see the saved file in /store. For some reason it shows up 10-15 mins later.

Anyone have the same problem?

I just tested one of mine. it showed up in the store folder within about 20 seconds. the database is quite small.

is your database very large? the larger the database, the longer it takes to create the backup file.

This backup method seems to be shunned around here, but it's what I do. I go into my cPanel and use the backup wizard. That will place a tar file in your FTP with the database and the FTP files under public_html. Just download that archive and extract with 7Z. Search in the mysql for your database files which will end in sql and in the homedir folder will be your public_html folder.

I put those two together in a SFX archive with 7Z and place that archive in an encrypted Truecrypt container and upload to Amazon S3, another cloud provider, my local FTP at home and burned to DVD/RW and Blu-ray BDRE.

Just downloading the database means noting if you don't have your public_html files. So you might as well download both.

How is it related to the removed download within phpBB?

Discussing the various possibilities of creating a backup of the phpBB database is offtopic, I believe

BTW: I run mysqldumper via cron on a separate subdomain on a daily base for all database instances on my server and transfer the database backup files via ftp to another server. No need for any manual action at all.

The subject is about backups so that's why I mentioned it. One doesn't even need to use that ACP functionality. I never have. And like I said, with just a database and no public_html folder you have an incomplete backup.

This is the thing, that people have different ways of doing things, different backups, different software and systems Please don't assume everything is the same as yours.

phpbb files can be replaced with the click of 2 fingers,so I do not need to download it every week... or my website gallery of a few hundred megabytes. If I had to download the files and html public root via cpanel it would be very large. Also costly using a phone away from home.
But I do need to download my forum database which changes daily . Relatively extremely small, yet inversely proportionally important as it contains data from 2005 as well as new members and contributions.
Data is everything! fies can be replaced. Logging into cpanel, file manager or some other backup script to do a whole domain backup is not the answer when I could do it with a couple of clicks from the board admin page.

for user id 2 only.
Don't trust a user id. User id 2 is the default founder on a default installation, but can be changed to a regular user, a administrator with lesser permissions, deleted at all ...

It is common for older boards:
  1. first owner ("Joe") installs a board - admin "Joe" gets ID 2
  2. after a few years, ownership changes to "Jim", User "Jim" with ID 936 gets founder status, founder status of "Joe" is removed, all permissions including ftp credentials are transferred to "Jim". "Jim" changes credentials
  3. a few years later, another founder "Jason" is nominated to assist "Jim" - "Jason" with ID 4711 will be founder too
  4. afterwards, User "Joe" has no interest to participate any more, and ask the board admins to remove his account - User ID 2 will be deleted.

"Jim" can always use his ftp access to download the database backup

What happens if there is a
  • 3a. intermezzo: "Joe" gets angry with "Jim" and wants to access all board data
With your extension, "Joe" can download the database backup and has access to all personal and confidential data stored in the database.

Then why did't phpbb think about this in the 20 thousand releases they handed out for admins to get used to features.

Also you need to think about the type of buddies you hang with  if you got buddies like that.

you also need to not be niave and think that your best buddie today will not ever find a need to screw you over tomorrow.

they have considered it now. things change.

your extension is fine, just don't base it on the userID. base it on groups like the admin group and those problems won't happen.

or, just live with the change that is for your benefit and have a safer board for you and your members.

To be fair any one that does not have a database and file system back up is a muppet so admins can delete or trash what ever YOU should always have a backup.
