Is it essential that the Vendor folder & files are uploaded?

Post by Armstrong » Fri Jul 19, 2019 10:27 pm

OK!. Im uploading forums. Updating them. Reinstalling them.

But here in Scotland I am pushing it if I judge my internet connectivity by anything but half 56k dial up from the 90's. Yes. True. We have a half meg line servicing about 170 houses right out in the sticks here.

Do i really need to upload all the Vendor folders of about 2,300 files and 400 folder etc etc?
What is a skeleton PHPBB please?

The vendor folder contains all the dependencies phpBB needs to run, so yes, it's essential.

The files folder not so much.

Or maybe just drive to a nearby library/McDonalds/etc where they have faster internet. Luckily phpBB is small in size.

 :D You laugh but... I have had to do this in the past in other areas. Berkshire for one. Mid UK. Believe it or not.

So thankyou for your information. Just maybe tonight connectivity is torturously slow.
I shall endeavor to upload the .zip and decompress server side.
I didnt want to do that as it gets fiddly as I dont always upload the whole hog, just the files I edit.

But thankyou for your wisdoms. :)

Be careful with decompressing on the server-side. I hear that sometimes doesn't work properly.

Do you have tethering on your cell phone? It's a rather small upload even umcompressed.

You hear correctly, unzipping on a server often messes with the file and folder structure and is not recommended.

The /files folder is essentially empty. You still haven't told us about your mobile. There are many FTP clients for iPhone and Android.

No need to ftp clients with mobiles, just activate the tethering aka portable hostspot which is shipped with the phone.
Can be done over wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), over Bluetooth or by physical connection using a cable, for example through USB.

I often use it with a LTE-4G SIM Card.

Many unlimited data plans do not permit tethering, for obvious reasons.

If you badly need a fast connection then you oughta buy a SIM Card with a data plan.
Ie.:
I pay 15,- €uros each 6 GB of data (LTE / 4G) and renew at the same price when limit has reached / finished.
I can make calls and text for free too, with the same plan.

Touching on 3Di's suggestion, the 3 network offer free sims with 200mb free data every month - you don't even have to top the sim card up to activate it, it is also pretty fast.

I've only used them in phones but they would probably work in those old wifi dongles that used to have the sim cards in.

Yeah, here in germany we have Dongles USB with data plans starting from 1 GB per day at 1,99 euro.

You use it only when you need it, LTE indeed.

Thankyou for your suggestions and knowledge and sorry for the late reply.

Yes, I have a mobile but in the Scottish highlands even homing pigeons are slow.
Half meg line only for phone connectivity.

BUT... I purchased a 3 inch square "pocket hub" from EE for Β£15 a month...
THEN put it INSIDE a sealed plastic box
with insulation tape holding it closed
on top of a 20 foot piece of 2x2 inch wood beam
strapped to the side of the house
gave the elevation required for a constant 40meg connection with a USB feed coming back down into the base computer systems.

LAUGH if you will.... but it works. What put me onto the idea was the "tethering" suggestion. I just got to thinking out of the box and then put the hub INSIDE one.

Thanks again people. You saved yet another day.
