3.2.x and nginx

Post by chanlon1 » Sun Aug 11, 2019 8:02 pm

My server has nginx, but its not enabled.
I;'m aware that when signalling/upgrading phpbb, nginx may need to be configured.

Couple of questions:
Would using nginx speed up the posting of topics? Does it have any affect on database read/write speed?
Secondly, does the configuration need to be completed only for an install/upgrade, or would the forum fail to work if nginx was enabled now?

thanks
ps: I'm aware that this may not be the most appropriate location for nginx questions, but hoping someone with phpbb has come across this before.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking or implying.

The phrase I boldfaced insinuates that nginx may become a necessary prerequisite for phpBB. Also: what is "signalling phpBB"?
My board's not broken, it just went peculiar

Apologies. Autocorrect on the phone put the wrong word in. Should have been installing and not signalling!

What I am curious about is the following.
If I enable nginx now, will the forum work ok with it or will the forum only have an issue when I come to do an update?
I’ve read about editing the conf file but not sure if that’s only required for installation and upgrades.

Also, I’ve yet to dig out an answer about whether nginx speeds up database read writes.

No, the same way Apache doesn't have any direct effect on database.

Nginx serves static files faster (CSS, JS, media, etc) than Apache.

You might need to do some changes in the official sample configuration file for Nginx, because it might not work well as is. For example, it currently can't handle routes like /app.php/route?extra=parameter (generated by phpBB itself), so you will need to make some tweaks.

I would suggest that if you don't really need Nginx, you should stay with your current web server, unless you want to learn.

Thanks, my forum is fast everywhere, except in posting and replying. I thought that nginx may speed things up, but it sounds as if it wouldn't make much difference with the database.

Also, although we can attempt to help you but, due to the number of varying configurations, we may not have the necessary expertise to help with any particular server setup. Your board is working fine as far as I can tell, personally I’d leave it alone.
