I would like to know what I need to do in order to prevent the same thing happening as it did for the OP.

Right now, I am running 3.2.5, my bad I've been lazy and forgot to update to 3.2.6, and my question is.

Can I update directly from 3.2.5 to 3.2.8 when using PHP 7.1?
absolutely.
follow these instructions exactly and in order and you will be fine, it will probably only take a few minutes.

Thanks, Robert.

However, after I read it I notice one thing that I think should be mentioned and that's when one need or could add the current config.php back, because without the current config.php file the user cannot login (the password is stored in the config.php).
4. Remove (delete) the config.php file, and the /images, /store and /files folders from the package (not your site).
Unless the user have write it down before updating the forum.

and just to be clear, that username password in the config.php file is for the board to be able to log into and access the database. It has nothing to do with the board user/admin to be able to log into the board.
as mentioned above, the instructions do NOT tell you to delete the exising working config.php file. just the opposite. It says to save that one and delete the new blank one from the new phpbb files you are going to upload.
