How to stop guests from adding to topic view counts?

Post by Robertb2017 » Sat Sep 28, 2019 9:42 pm

Is there a way to stop guests? For example, trolls as guests spend hrs/day making counts all end in 5 or 0.

Do they?
What a waste of time. I can't see why anyone would do that and what the point would be.

If you removed Guest permissions to see the forums, they can't view topics.

I want guests to read, as most are good, but I want to stop them from adding to the click count.

Post count.

So you have a topic and they click it over and over.

There are lots of people who do these types of things. Although not in KevC's pristine Phpbb world of angels.

I am guessing this will require yet another private developer customization.

I guess I just never bother looking at the counts to notice. I read the content. I don't think I've heard of it before either. It seems to serve no purpose other than to waste their own time so what's the point. How do you know it's not someone on your own forum doing it for a laugh? Or even a database incrementer that's set on 5 instead of 1 by mistake?

The point is: harassment.

Welcome the internet in 2019.

I wish I lived in your world of unicorns and virgins KevC.

And again, the question is how to stop 'guest' from influencing the count?

Can you answer the question and not criticize the question.

I suspect yet another big cost for a customization because PhpBB is outdated and not up to competitive standards these days. Which is why PhpBB forum are vanishing for successful sites.

Sad but true.

And you not helping, dinosaur rex.

boy that is a laugh. as far as I know phpbb is still in the top 2 or 3 most used bulletin board scripts in the world. free or paid.

your board must be overrun with children if you are having these types of problems.

luck,
robert

Just remove the post count display in the index page (comment it out in the template). It's extraneous information anyway. If you use the "hot topic" icon, replace it with the regular icon.

I don't know why you would think that something this trivial would be written into the script. Is it part of any other forum script you know of?

One other thought: Ignore it. If it really is a troll, they will tire of doing it after awhile.

The answer to the question "Is there a way to stop guests?" is yes, by creating an extension that prevents the view counter from being updated when the current user is a guest.
I wrote the thing that does BBCodes in 3.2.

At last a good post.

However this will be yet another expensive cost.
