post/reply via email?

Post by DavideBianchini » Thu Oct 17, 2019 3:52 am

We have to migrate away from Yahoo Groups to a new forums. However, some of our members are used to doing everything through email, i.e., posting questions and reading replies.

I was wondering if phpBB has this ability, either natively or an extension.

Thanks!

No, as the BB in phpBB stands for bulletin board. What you want is a discussion list, because if all your users want to communicate thru e-mail there's no need for a website at all.

Luckily phpBB doesn't naively include that natively. ;)

That makes sense, thanks for the response.

Interesting, thank you. It looks like we could set it up for the handful of members who use this method. Put them into their own group, which we can easily monitor to prevent abuse of the email-to-post system.

@david63
Thank you so much for this. This is exactly what we need. I'd expect more people will be asking for this, since Yahoo is closing down their Groups, and thus forcing everyone to look for suitable alternatives. Many of our members have grown accustomed to email posting. So if that functionality can be supported in phpBB (albeit not on a large scale, but for those handful of members who request it), then this is a huge plus for phphBB.

As you know, people don't like change. So if we can accommodate their needs, that would be preferable.

And that is what brought me here as well. I see the mail-to-post thread [viewtopic.php?f=456&t=2525596 ], which looks to be half of it - the other half would be, of course, ["post-to-mail"] so my question is: Is this native to phpBB or perhaps a MOD if not?

Oh yes good question. I assume that the checkbox "Notify me when a reply is posted" would work if it could be on by default, but it does not contain the actual message in the notification, just a link to the forums. Can this notification email be customized?

Possibly, you should ask in the topic for the extension.

Do you guys know if "Notify me when a reply is posted" can be ticked on by default? At least they will get an email notification when a reply is posted.

It can for new users with this extension - viewtopic.php?f=456&t=2428976

But there is always the possibility that the user could turn it off

Hi David ... it appears that the Tiki Wiki CMS natively supports/integrates yahoo distribution lists (among others) into their forum module - it may well be an Aircraft Carrier when all you need is a Light Missile Cruiser, but it's worth checking out.. https://doc.tiki.org/Forum-and-Mailing- ... ronization. I'm doing that now as an option to phpBB.. (and apologies if I violated protocol by referring to another product.. but nobody wants to dislike a product that won't do something their users demand. I'm now assessing that demand before I make a decision).
