Avoid spam mails from not registered visitors. Block IP-address?

Post by PrebenDK »

As Admin I have increasing problems with receiving spam mails from not registered visitors. Many come from the same IP addresses but apparently different mail addresses. How can I stop these mails? - How at all is it possible that a non registered visitor can send mail to me?

If the Emails are not coming from registered users, how are you determining that this problem has anything to do with phpBB?
If I fire up my spam machine and send you an email, what does that have to do with phpBB?

The extension „obscure contact us“ has helped me to reduce the spam via the contact us function.

The mail tells it:
HejAdministrator

Følgende er en email fremsendt via kontaktformularen på "Vinsidernes
debatforum".Beskeden er afsendt fra en gæst som angav følgende kontaktdata:

meaning: The following email is sent from the contact formula on "name of forum". The message is sent from a guest who gave the following contactdata:...

Use the extension mentioned above if you are getting spam from the Contact form.

After enabling the extension I can see "Contact us" in the footer. But when disabled I can't see any contactform, and I can't find it anywhere. Where is it?

I had never tried that before. I can confirm. After deactivating the extension, the standard contact button is missing.
With the extension activated, it is there again.
I have no clue. For support, it is required to post the problem in the support section of the extension in the Customisation Database. I'm afraid only the extension author can help.

I found how to restore the basic function. Go to ACP, General Tab, Board Configuration, Contact page
Enable there the contact us page. Make sure that board emails are enabled as well, otherwise the contact us button is hidden as well.

The extension, when activated, turns off the board setting for the standard contact us form. When the extension is being disabled, the standard form remains turned off and need manual activation.

It seems to do the job. Since I enabled the extension five days ago I have not received any spam, where I received numerous per hour before enabling it.
So thanks again!
