Update from 3.2.5 to 3.3.4 failed

Post by jkpieterse »

Hi,

I need some urgent help.
Today I tried to update my forum at excelexperts.nl/forum/index.php to 3.3.5 by using the dedicated install package downloaded from the link provided by the forum software.
I first created a full site backup.
Then downloaded the update package, unzipped it and uploaded the two folders "install" and "vendor" to the main forum folder.
I then clicked the link to go to the install page.
The forum software gave an error (sorry, I forgot which exactly)
So I decided to restore my backup.

My forum now kinda works: I can login, the admin area works, but the forum styles are gone haywire as e.g. icons are missing and if I try to start a new thread, the box to enter my message is not there.

HELP!

I take it you wanted to upgrade to 3.3.4 (not to 3.3.5 which hasn't been released yet)

The correct way to upgrade is described in Upgrading from 3.2 to 3.3
(which is actually mentioned in the download area:)
If updating from phpBB 3.1.x or 3.2.x then please see our guide for the recommended updating method.
The most simple way to restore your board would be to put the files back and to restore the backup you made (it's more work than absolutely necessary but is less complicated that the fast way).
Once your board is back in the state it was before you used the autoupdate, use the Full Package method (and remove the /installer and /production from /cache AND io_lock.lock and install_config.php + any migrationsxxx from /store if present.
Then navigate to your board /install and run the database update only.
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

Hi,

Thanks for responding. You must be right about the version :-)

Found the reason why the backup restore appeared not to work : the software that managed my website had updated the php version. After reporting the php version to 7.1 the forum now works again. I'll start looking into the update method tomorrow.

Anything I need to take into account regarding the php version during the update steps?

phpBB 3.3 4 will run with php 7.1.3+ but if you were planning on using php 7.4 you can either switch just before updating (that is after having uploaded the 3.3.4 files) or after updating. If you choose the first path, after switching to php 7.4, only access your 3.2.5 board for the upgrade (that is after uploading the 3.3.4 files), DO NOT open your board with the 3.2.5 files as you will get errors.

what is the version of phpBB you are running now?

if it is already 3.3.4 then you don't need to do anything as phpBB 3.3.4 works on php 7.2 and above I believe.

Upgrading from 3.2 to 3.3 is the recommended method for your case.

Do you mean actually do it for you or something else?

Actually doing it would be awesome.
I would make sure the forum has a backup before we start, so it can be restored in case anything goes haywire.
I'd arrange a temporary ftp user and forum admin account and share credentials so the person doing the update can do his/her work.
This all must be done prior to jan 25 as then the site hoster will update the PHP version to 7.4

Ok, you may get an offer of free help in this forum but we have the Wanted! forum where you can ask for paid assistance. Following the instructions as per my previous post though should help you through the process for free. As long as you make a good backup of files and database there should be no issues.
