First of all, why 3 posts when everything could be centralised in 1 post?

Next:
1: no versions 2.2.8 or 2.2.11 exist
2: If you're trying to update, why are you installing?
3: "the error message" is not an error message but information that your Install directory is still present. and therefore only the ACP will be accessible.

Do you have a database backup? What's the phpBB version (before you starting whatever you started) and do you want to upgrade to 3.3.5?
Spelling is freeware, which means you can use it for free.
On the other hand, it is not open source, which means you cannot change it or publish it in a modified form.

I actually thought to install to the latest one that is not 3.3.x

Maybe I'm blind then but doesn't it read 3.2.11 on the ACP (see the screenshot).

Anyway, I did download all the data before this YES!
I also backed up from the ACP before this.
Anyway, the latest one is 3.2.9 maybe then?

Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry I meant 3.2.8

Anyway, do I upload all the data first and after that restore from the ACP or vice versa?

Forgive me but you have pointed to 3.2.11 yourself and then ask if 3.2.9 is the latest (later even changed to 3.2.8)

Again: the prinscreens you posted show that you installed, you did not update.

The first thing to do now is to restore your board to the state it was in before you attempted to update.
And then explain exactly what is you want to to: I suspect you wanted to update to 3.2.11 in which case: Full Package
and
Important
If you have previously abandoned an update attempt to try a different method, you will need to remove the following files from the server:

store/install_config.php

store/io_lock.lock

Hi, sorry for my hassling - I actually wanted to update to the latest version that is not the new 3.3.x from the 2.2.8
And I wanted to update to the 2.2.9 but noticed that there's also 2.2.11
And I wanted to do so because one of the Extension requires 2.2.9

Anyway, sorry for the trouble - I successfully got my board back... phew....

Even though I'm now in the situation (AGAIN) wherea's I'd be keen to update to the 2.2.9
I guess I'll see tomorrow, if I'll give it a try. And I hope I won't be f*cking stuff up again.

Cheers and thanks!

requires? or needs at least? (+ again : phpBB 2.2.9 does not exist)

Or to be pedantic - phpBB 2.2.9 (if there ever was such a version) didn't use extensions as they had not been invented in those days!!
