Doubts before convert forum vbulletin 4.2.5 to phpbb3

Post by wonder_wonder » Sat Dec 08, 2018 4:45 pm

Hello.
I thinking in convert my actual vbulletin 4.2.5 to phpbb3 I have used phpbb and I am delighted with it.
I have some doubts before start convert, on the one hand, the conversion, for that I created another thread viewtopic.php?f=561&t=2494471

And in this section, after searching, I expose the doubts / problems that I have not found and do not have to do with the conversion.

The possible doubts that have come to me ...
Currently in that forum (vb), I have sidebar (which are side blocks as there are in this web) some by default (latest topics, latest messages ...) and other customizable with html code that I insert. For me, it is important. I not view some about this, exist in phpbb?

Portal or cms, like this web, in index portal or cms with latest news and others, and in folder forum, the forum, I try the cms extension but...hum...isn't that I search...

I have sections like Articles and another Gallery. Both, I have added them in the navbar menu, where the user can access them in an easy and fast way.
I know that in phpbb I can have both Articles and Gallery
The "custom" navbar menu with url destination that I choose, is also important for me, from this, I view this extension (thanks a user of this site): https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/exte ... ultilinks/
But I view that, I can only add 5 links and I need add more than 5 links/menus.
I search some similar to what is on this site, navbar menu buttons more customizable or similar to the style of the forum, as I comment, as what is in this forum, that type of menu in navbar is what I look for or like :)

And I have a download module (not user attachments) but a section (also added in the navigation bar) where there are certain files that users access (according to permissions) and download.
This if I have not found anything similar by phpbb3, and it is something that can not be "deleted" in case of migration. I could create a download forum where the files exist and only in that forum has download permissions, it is the solution that has occurred to me, but you should be able to create a link in the navigation bar to that section of the forum.

I would opt for the style of prosilver that comes by default in phpbb3, I would adapt it as close to the current one as I have it, but I do not want third-party styles, because, when there is an update, minimize any possible problem / incompatibility, if only I had changed Some colors of the prosilver, then it would be easy to put them back in the new version.

This post is long, sorry for that. I went to the extensions section, I search but the search engine tells me many times result 0, but instead, if I go one by one, listing in detail if they appear, if I put a word of an extension in the extensions search on many occasions I gives result 0, when that extension, if it is. I even put the name of the extension followed by phpbb in google, and it gives me the direct link of the extensions area.

Any comments, suggestions, opinions or whatever, I thank you in advance.

Thanks and best regards!

As a beginner, I will take the easiest one :) The best way to achieve this is to install Prosilver SE:
https://www.phpbb.com/customise/db/styl ... l_edition/
You will get a ready file structure for a "child" style with an incremental CSS file that you can easily edit. Prosilver SE I maintained by phpBB team and is updated along with the software.

As for other questions, I suggest splitting them into smaller topics and be as specific as possible about what you want to achieve. The support team here is great and phpBB is customisable, I just feel that a long topic with different issues is not the most efficient way of reaching out for support...

Hi,
Thanks for your reply :)

About Prosilver SE...thanks for the info, it's something that he does not know.
My intention is not to use third-party styles, modify the default with the desired colors, so, any update, it will be easy, if I depend on third-party styles ... hum ...

For the other questions, you're absolutely right, it's a very general and long post, although I had initially exposed it in the support area, I see I've been moved to this area (and now I have two posts in this area about it ...), but I thought that, maybe open 2 or 3 posts ... in the end I decided to put everything in one, but I agree with you, it's not a good idea.
At the moment I am in full conversion, the specific doubts that arise from the rest of the topics, I will expose them from post to post :) (not like in this one).

Regards!

actually you are looking at the style update situation backwards.

if you change prosilver then you have to manually update it every time there is an update.

if you create a custom style/child style, then you only have to update the few files in it that may need it when phpbb gets an update.

prosilver will be updated automatically when you update phpbb.
your custom style can inherit from prosilver therefore there could only be a couple of files to edit for a phpbb update.

this is exactly what prosilver_se does. there are only a few files in prosilver_se instead of the many many files in prosilver.

when phpbb is updated, prosilver is automatically updated. then, all you have to do is update the few files that are in prosilver_se that need it.

so, to do that with your own style, you would simply create a copy of prosilver, rename it to whatever. then, figure out which files you need to change in prosilver for your custom look. then remove all the other prosilver files from your custom file.

it will then inherit the other files from prosilver just like prosilver_se does.

that is the whole point of the way phpbb styles are created etc.

Hello.
In the first time, sorry for my delay in reply, in this last days, I am immersed fully in the migration tests (each test takes an average of 5 to 6 hours ...) and I have not had much time to go looking at the rest.
Thanks for your thoughtful response, really!

This is something that I did not know, and I really consider it very important to know and a great tool. As you say, if I modify prosilver, in every update of phpbb I will have to update all the changes that I have made previously.
I did not know everything you mention, if prosilver_se is a "copy" of prosilver, but only the necessary files are modified to adapt them to our style / taste, and when phpbb is updated, we update prosilver, but we only have to make the changes in the few files prosilver_se, really this is very good!
so, to do that with your own style, you would simply create a copy of prosilver, rename it to whatever. then, figure out which files you need to change in prosilver for your custom look. then remove all the other prosilver files from your custom file.

This part you mention, create a copy of prosilver, make changes to the files that are necessary, delete the rest of the files from the copy of prosilver, and this will inherit everything else from prosilver, is it the same as using prosilver_se?

Actually, this post for me is very good and important, I appreciate it very much!

I have always thought that it is better to use a modified prosilver style, than to use a style created by third parties, so that there are no problems in the updates, or do not have to wait, or that those third parties no longer update the style and then ...
For this reason and for more, the information in this post is something that I did not know and I appreciate very much the attention with which you have explained it to me. Thank you!

At the moment I continue with my migration tests, I hope to solve them soon, as soon as they are solved, I return to this topic.

Again, thanks and a very strong greeting.

Wonder.
