evaluating a smf > phpbb overhaul

Post by rrichardson » Sat Apr 20, 2019 9:38 pm

Hi there,

I am a SimpleMachines forum owner for almost a decade. I have my likes and dislikes about this piece of well coded software and I noticed by opening phpbb.com and then demo that a lot of options I find a requirement are already there, however I have questions.

a. Is it possible to import a smf 1.x database that has been upgraded to 2.0.15

b. If so, what to do with passwords? I noticed I can't use special characters in the password I required to give to my newbie account.

c. Is phpBB phone friendly? I can not use smf 2.1 (phone friendly) since there is no database import guarantee

d. Is there a reliable (in the sense of images are forever) solution for people that not know or want to learn BBCode that involves posting images from phone? It's not really easy with smf 2.0 something like postimage.org plugin

e. Where do I start css coding? I really want to customize my forum fully.

f. Can all fonts be changed easy? For example fonts from google to make it smashing nowadays look?

g. Is phpBB foolproof like having an option moderators can delete posts but actually send it to a digital bin?

I really have more questions but I think for starters seven is already enough.

Please keep in mind I'll take 100% responsibillity (as it should) that if Im told database import works and it doesn't, i'll be able to find support, I will test on a non live server, I'm a Linux user,

b. phpBB allows special characters in passwords
c. phpBB styles are reactive on mobile devices
d. Two clicks, no BBCode
e. You can modify the .css as you like
g. Yes.

Probably best to do this in baby steps.

smf 2.0.5 -> phpBB 3.0.11 (converter, phpBB 3.0.11)
3.0.11 -> 3.0.14 (phpBB 3.0.14)
3.0.14 -> 3.1.12 (phpBB 3.1.12)
3.1.12 -> 3.2.5 (phpBB 3.2.5)

After you get on 3.0.11, follow these steps for each baby step listed above:
  • Delete the following files from the package:
    • The config.php file
    • The images/ directory
    • The files/ directory
    • The store/ directory
  • On your website, delete all files from your board EXCEPT for:
    • The config.php file
    • The images/ directory
    • The files/ directory
    • The store/ directory
  • Upload the contents of the phpBB3 directory from your computer to your forum's directory. You may be prompted to overwrite the remaining files. If prompted to merge or overwrite directories, choose to merge them.
  • Update the database:

    Tip
    For large boards, you may wish to update via the command line instead of using a web browser. From your board's root, execute the following command: php ./bin/phpbbcli.php db:migrate --safe-mode
    • Using your web browser, visit install/ in your board's root. (e.g. http://www.example.com/yourforum/install)
    • Click the Update tab
    • Click the Update button
    • Select "Update database only" and click Submit
  • Wait for the progress bar to reach 100% and for a message indicating that the update has completed
  • Delete the install/ directory
Obviously, if you have questions, ask. ;)

be sure to create a new database backup after each of the version updates/upgrades. that way if it all goes south at any step you will not have to start over from the beginning

Yes, the built in Q&A seems to suit most users.

I've been reading viewtopic.php?t=1013655 which is an archived topic about database conversion. But from what I read, it looks to me it reads the whole forum over http? It would be great if someone can tell me what conversion gives best results or tell me that there is just one way?
