phpBB template on google chrome

Post by Aza2000 » Fri Aug 23, 2019 12:30 am

Hello,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I haven't coded html and css in a while and I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to phpBB and trying to edit the code.

I was hired by someone to try and make the website look better but every time I move the index.htm is comes up with this.
Image

File: C:\Users\adminpc\Desktop\se_square_left\se_square_left\theme

What i did, I moved the code from overall_footer.html and viewtopic_body.html into index.htm and moving that file into Google Chrome to try and see what i'm changing, Do I NEED to do it using phpBB ACP?

Thank you.

hi, you can't do it that way. the template files are not normal html.

they are a combination of html and php variables and css .

what you need to do is either work on a copy of the style on the live server or install web server software on your computer to run a copy of phpbb with the style installed.

remember, the style version must match the phpbb version to work properly.

you can install xamp or wampserver or usbwebserver etc. you can google for those.
very simple one click installs and then you create a database using the builtin phpmyadmin and copy over the phpbb files and run the phpbb install and done.

forgot to mention, the index.htm files you find in phpbb are only blank files so that the contents of a directory can not be views by just accessing it.
they are not usable for any other purpose.
I'm baaaaaccckkkk. still doing work on donation basis. PM your needs.

As Lumpy mentioned, use a personal webserver so that you can have multiple copies (very useful to compare the effects a template modification).
