Which browsers are officially supported?

Post by Big Monstro »

Hello.

Which browsers are officially supported by phpBB 3.2?

The "Styles Submission Policy" hasn't been updated since the phpBB 3.2 release, so I don't know the answer.

phpBB 3.0 = IE6+ and Firefox
phpBB 3.1 = IE8+ and Firefox
phpBB 3.2 = ?

Thank you for your answers,

Hello :)

Saw a similar conversation over on Area 51: http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic ... 31&t=47746

In the absence of clarity from the phpBB Team, I'd suggest it's probably best to maintain fallback support for IE8 until the end of 2017. Even though it is painful and quite restricting :(

Thank you, Christian

Although it's not reported, I now believe the development team actually dropped Internet Explorer 8.

How can I presume that? The new phpBB 3.2 introduces emojis, and these emojis use SVG instead of PNG: the vectorial format is supported by Internet Explorer since IE9 and there is no way to disable that feature via the ACP for the administrators or in the UCP at the user's side.

What's more, access to a phpBB 3.2 board with IE8 can result in JavaScript errors, unlike phpBB 3.1 board, despite the fact phpBB 3.2 still use jQuery 1.x, designed for IE6+ (therefore, JS errors are due to core.js).

The proSilver style still renders quite well in IE8, though. But these flaws (incompatible emojis and core.js) suggest the current phpBB was not thoroughly tested from IE8 and that IE9 become the actual minimum.

Updating the "Styles Submission Policy" would be appreciated

note: for the emojis, it would be simple to avoid the compatibility issues, by using the PNG alternatives. The server cdn.jsdelivr.net proposes PNG images in addition to SVG. Examples : http://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f44f.png instead of http://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/svg/1f44f.svg ; or http://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/png/1f604.png instead of http://cdn.jsdelivr.net/emojione/assets/svg/1f604.svg

Current supported browsers are IE9+ and the latest 2 browsers for all others

Sorry if this was not made more clear. The choice to drop IE8 was made early on in the development of 3.2 as IE 11 gained more traction and Microsoft stopped supporting older browsers themselves while also integrating an IE8 mode in IE 11.
