new site and some styling (footer links) questions

Post by urzh » Mon Aug 05, 2019 2:00 pm

Hi,
I'm starting my first phpBB forum. I have extensive web dev experience prior.
I'm running phpBB 3.2.7 with pro silver theme.

1. I want to create 2 or 3 more hyperlinks on the footer next to Terms & Privacy with content blocks. How can I go about doing this the "right way" so when PHP comes out with updates it doesn't override my files? (I also updated Terms & Privacy language in /en/ucp.php, hoping this doesn't get overrided)

2. How can I create an override for the copyright footer? I edited the functions.php to by PHPBB and another organization.

3. How can I create homepage Meta Data?

I read about creating child styles but I think I only need it for the above mentioned so looking for the best quickstart for it.

Thanks

create a child/custom style and make the edits to the overall_footer.html file as you wish
2. How can I create an override for the copyright footer? I edited the functions.php to by PHPBB and another organization.
undo the changes to the functions.php file and make those changes directly to the overall_footer.html file in your child/custom style.
3. How can I create homepage Meta Data?
I believe there is a meta data extension you can install

I read about creating child styles but I think I only need it for the above mentioned so looking for the best quickstart for it.

creating a child style or a custom style is very simple.
copy prosilver style folder. rename the folder, edit the included style.cfg file and change the style name from prosilver to the same as the new folder name. done
now, make your edits to those files and upload and install your custom style.
at each update you can do the standard file replacement and it won't touch your custom style files at all.
you can then update any files there that are affected which is usually minimal.

Now I've copied my prosilver folder and renamed the folder and then updated the style.cfg in that folder with the new name. What I don't get is what I do after I edit the files in this folder to activate them? Shouldn't I see this new style in the "Customise -> Syles" tab of ACP? Because I don't.

Make sure your new style name is spelled exactly the same way everywhere.
You may have to purge the /cache or Browse to: ACP > General > Server configuration > Load settings and set:
"Recompile stale style components": Yes

Nothing to do with this request but your cookie domain is wrong, at the moment it’s mamptest.com and it should be .funnyinterestingcool.com, note the leading dot. See Fixing incorrect cookie settings.

Actually it's funny but at the same time kind of reassuring that urzh actually knows what he's doing. Yeah, these small mistakes happen and it usually takes some time to spot them yourself.

Ha, so was still looking for help on 2 things now:

1. I want to create 2 or 3 more hyperlinks on the footer next to Terms & Privacy with content blocks. How can I go about doing this the "right way" so when PHP comes out with updates it doesn't override my files? (I did the above)

2. How can I create an override for the copyright footer? I edited the functions.php to by PHPBB and another organization.

php updates have nothing to do with phpbb styles or your edits.

if you mean phpBB updates then what I posted above about creating a new style will solve all those problems.

don't edit any of the php files, just make the changes you want to your custom style files.

that way, when it is time to update phpBB you just replace all the old files with new ones except for the config.php file, then update the database, then update your custom style if it is needed.

Hi Robert, understood. I think I need some handholding...

So for example, could you help me with steps to create the a new link article? A already copied my template and renamed it. (I mentioned it wasn't showing in ACP though)

is it still not showing in the acp customize tab under install styles?
I see the files, they are where they should be.
if not, the only thing I can see wrong is the copyright symbol coding.
what editor did you use to open/edit the file?

as to creating a new link in the footer, just open the overall_footer.html file from the template folder.

decide where you want the new link to go and type it in :

<a href="https://linkdomain.com/filelink.php">link text</a>

See my screenshots regarding the new style not showing in ACP. I used textedit for mac which I normally use which does not format text

Ok, so create that new link in the new template (prosilvercustom) folder correct?

try purging the cache. your custom style is there where it should be. I can see the files.
like I said, the copyright symbol does not show up correctly as in a different text encoding was used or something.
I have no idea if that would cause it not so show up.
try setting your text editor to utf8 and open and save that file again and upload it back.

to make your edits to the footer;
download and open the styles/prosilvercustom/template/overall_footer.html file in your text editor.

make your changes, save the file in plain text and upload back to the server.
make sure that you either changed the recompile stale style components to yes or at least you purge the cache after each file edit.

if you do not do that you will not see the changes you made to the files.
however, you MUST get the style installed before any of this will matter.

oh, what is that DS_store stuff. that is likely going to be the problem. that should not ever be in any of the phpbb folders. so, whatever you are using to open/edit the files is causing that.
