Icons: oh si, we have a plethora.

Is there a handy list of what all these arcane board and topic icons are actually supposed to mean? I notice lots of variations on a general theme, but most of them don't convey any information to the uninitiated. It's a bit like looking at cuneiform. :D

Thanks. I assume the tiny red star is for things you have posed in. Or is it something else?

look at /styles/yourstyle/theme/images

explanations of various facets (you're asking specifically about mine):

forum link: topic has been moved to another forum
unread: contains unread posts
read: does not contain unread posts
hot: popular topic
mine: topic you have posted in
locked: new posts are not allowed
sticky: stuck at the top of topic list

i agree, they're not very intuitive

D'oh. Should have thought of checking icon names.

This sort of reminds me of when I used to run a forum on another system yonks ago. Oodles of icons. Most people never knew or cared what they meant. I found that if I got rid of most of them, everyone was just as happy and restyling things was easier. ;)

I think this sort of thing is a leftover from early forum days, when people were excited about being able to put things online and thought the more information, the better. Gets a bit TMI sometimes. There's a lot to be said for stripping things back a bit.

Depends, but at least where one of the posts is yours.

To me almost all of them are still useful, i.e. when checking all topics I've posted in or my subscriptions to see which have new replies (with the latter not needing to have posts from me).

I knew I had seen one posted before, but took way too long to find it: viewtopic.php?p=15009641#p15009641

Alternate: Viewlegend - "Big Icon Legend"

Hello, right -- or maybe use a great legend? Are the OP looking for an *Extension for the default symbols that phpBB uses?

I don't know if I understood this question correctly.

*If so, please visit: Viewlegend - "Big Icon Legend"

@EA117: Nice one. Thanks.

Regarding "hot topics": IME that usually ends up being useless, because if it's based on number of replies then you always get stacks of old threads classified as "hot topics". And if anyone really wants to know what's current they'll probably be using "unread posts" anyway. I'd class "hot topic" icons as being the first against the wall when the revolution comes.

No, I'm not looking for an extension, but someone else might want it.

I don't really want a visible legend on the boards, simply because I am more inclined to reduce clutter rather then increase it.

Disorder or confusion? I can't recognize this when using the mentioned big viewlegend. The opposite is the case and the decisive point is when contributions are considered popular on your board .... ;)

That'll work. But my point was I don't think they're even worth including in an app.

the legend was removed long ago as its fairly intuitive what they are based on given the names of the images, and some simple observation of how they function. Not to mention its a concept across most forum implementations. While yes the need for an icon is really only useful for a handful of the situations ie: announcement, pinned/stickied, read/unread, and owned topics. The added benefit of always displaying an icon provides consistent layout control and prevents shifting of content. For this reason its likely to remain the default. We/I have however played around with the alternatives like the way its handled on the blizzard/battle.net forums or as tags similar to some other forums. The icons are a much simpler and more condensed/consistent UI.
