For me to follow the arguments:
a = affects both (message-box textarea and contact form)
b = affects message-box textarea

And that's why the codings are not identical.

If you think about it, when you only have one small change sure css file edit is simpler, but if there is more best way is to create an extension like Dan's and add your bits and bobs there. This way is more effective because you don't need worry that it will get overwritten and when the update comes you don't need to reapply the changes.

That's not a bad way of looking at it. Effectively it would be like a custom.css file but, with no need to edit the template to call it. It'd be a good solution for anyone who wasn't comfortable editing templates. Although if the extension gets updated you would still be screwed if you didn't take a backup first.
