I don't see how it has any extraordinarily special significance. 07-07-07 was slightly more highly regarded due to it being the number 7. But we've had a day like this since 01-01-01, and we'll have another each year until 12-12-12.

The number 8 in China is regarded similarly to the number 7 here in the States. I don't really know what specific significance we assign to 7, but the Chinese associate it with wealth (according to media reports, anyway).
I will likely watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, because those are often rather interesting. Remember the giant cigarette at Salt Lake City?
Also, it is interesting to see how comparatively large or small the Olympic teams are from the various nations participating.
But the actual athletic events are a major league yawn. I know absolutely nothing about rowing, or gymnastics, or many of the other sports that are part of Olympic competition.
