08-08-08

Post by Rhet-or-Ric »

.

I have to admit that I'm not terribly sure what that "No Chat' rule means, but I saw something about MacDonalds and figured that some topics of a general nature are allowed -- so I'm going to go for it.

Soon it will be 08-08-08, yes?

Just wondering if anyone has any special thing they are going to do for this day?

I imagine there will be some interesting collectables available for the date.

But do any of you plan on something really, really heavy -- like getting hitched?

Think about all those kids born on that day. In eight years they can say, "I'm eight years old and I was born on 08-08-08." Now, that is pretty cool -- or will be.

I don't see how it has any extraordinarily special significance. 07-07-07 was slightly more highly regarded due to it being the number 7. But we've had a day like this since 01-01-01, and we'll have another each year until 12-12-12. ;)

So true, but we get to ask the question once a year for a few more years, and it could be significant for somebody.

I mean, heck, we won't get this chance again for a long, long time.

It always amuses me to see people focus on calendar numbers. Do you know how many times the Gregorian calendar has been adjusted or tweaked over the years? There is the Mayan calendar, the Jewish calendar, the Islamic calendar, the Chinese calendar, the Hindu calendar... the date 08-08-08 is a coincidence of numbers, nothing more.

Yes, and contrary to popular belief before the date, the world didn't end on Jun 6, 2006.

The number 8 in China is regarded similarly to the number 7 here in the States. I don't really know what specific significance we assign to 7, but the Chinese associate it with wealth (according to media reports, anyway).

I will likely watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, because those are often rather interesting. Remember the giant cigarette at Salt Lake City?
Also, it is interesting to see how comparatively large or small the Olympic teams are from the various nations participating.
But the actual athletic events are a major league yawn. I know absolutely nothing about rowing, or gymnastics, or many of the other sports that are part of Olympic competition.
