I am having a look at Notepad ++ but am having difficulty setting the "auto-complete" options. Am I getting the wrong end of the stick here, because I am assuming it will run through the various tags to save you time typing them... um, a bit like Dreamweaver.. or is this not a feature?

ahhhhh, that stupid " a post has been made since you started your post....." page got me again. another of my brilliant posts gone into the ether...

oh well,

the short version;
I use and love editpad lite.

it does everything a good text editor needs to do.

1. opens as many and as big files as your system memory can stand
2. search and replace for all open files, case sensitive, etc, etc
3. code highlite
4. etc, etc.

I've been using Coffeecup since about 2000 for everything.

It says HTML editor but it has highlighting for most major languages including php. The full version is like $50 which I have a license for, hassle free upgrades for life too.

The free version as far as I can tell is no different than the full version other than some missing graphics and other nonsense an advanced user isn't going to be interested in anyway.

The only thing the free version will do is insert a DIV with a link to their site when you create a new HTML page. I can't find anywhere in the documentation that states you have to leave it.

It also has a WYSIWG panel but I have never used it so have no idea how well it works.

I downloaded notepad++ recently because everyone here (and several other forums) said it was great, and I love it. It is the best text editor I have ever downloaded, including the ones you have pay for the full version.

Do you want an editor or an IDE? Dreamweaver is an IDE, Notepad++ is an editor.

Oh just an editor at the moment, but it would be nice to have that "tag-scroll" thing that Dreamweaver has.

In that case, allow me to suggest giving HTML-Kit 292 a look. It's not Dreamweaver, but it's not just a text editor, either.
We should talk less, and say more.

If you mean the auto-complete/intellisense-like part of Notepad++ it's a setting. Go to Settings->Preferences. You'll notice the very obvious Backup/Auto-completion tab in which you can enable the auto-complete feature.

I'm in love with PSPad, I have never had such a powerful editor. Pretty much everything is customizable and I didn't find a feature it didn't have :)

Vim generally. If I'm writing code then Eclipse (for Java or C++) or Zend Studio (not free, but for PHP).
